When are you able to start running?

Recommended Posts

I'm one month post VGS and have been walking everyday since two hours after surgery! (Very determined to do this right!). I feel I'm at a point where I'm ready to start jogging/walking. I use to be a runner back in the day and I feel my body saying, "let's go!" But I'm not sure if it's too soon. Please share your advice you received from your physicians.

Also, has anyone heard when you are allowed to do sit ups or planks?

My surgeon said wait 6 weeks before strenuous exercise (like weight lifting and running). I was the same way -- walking and walking and walking and when that 6 week point got here, boom, out for a run I went!!!

Running when skinny is much more fun.

InnerFitnessModel - you sound just like me. I used to be a runner too, and can't wait to get back into it. My surgery is still a month away, but I would like to keep up on your progress. I know you're anxious, but a month does sound a little soon. Better ask your doc. ????

My doc said a month was okay to start slow jogging, but if it didn't feel right to wait for 6 weeks.

Thank you all for the information! I see the doctor in two weeks so I guess I'll have to relax a bit. but I can't wait to start back!

I am at 4 weeks out and wanting to run so specifically asked my dr if I could at least jog. She said absolutely not. She said I can start jogging slowly at 6 weeks and build up from there.

Just like you, I've been walking since right after surgery.

My dr also told me to wait 6 weeks to do any strenuous exercise. He said walking was ok, but that's it!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
