Liver shrink... Am I eating to many carbs?

Recommended Posts

Here's the plan my NUT gave me...

Unlimited Non starchy vegetables

Breakfast:: Protein shake or bar

Mid morning snack:: 1/2 cup or tennis ball size fruit

Lunch:: Protein Shake or bar

Mid afternoon snack:: 1/2 cup or tennis ball size fruit

Dinner:: 3oz or deck of card size meat

2 pieces or low cal bread OR 6 unsalted crackers OR 1 potato size of computer mouse

1/2 cup or tennis ball size fruit

Bedtime snack:: 1/2 cup or tennis ball size fruit

Interesting! Every surgeon is different.

My pre-op was high Protein and no starches/sugars: no bread, no fruit, etc. I referred to it as the bacon diet because bacon was a-ok.

My pre-op diets have been pretty straightforward: 4 whey Protein isolate shakes per day (I like Syntrex Nectars, 0 fat, 0 carb, 25 protein) made with Water or skim milk (skim changes the carb/prot count slightly... I actually use unsweetened vanilla almond milk which adds fewer calories than skim milk). I can also have 1+ cup of strained, low-fat cream Soup like Healthy choice (I like the chicken and the celery) OR 1 Light and Fit greek yogurt. I can also have unlimited sugar free Jello and sf popsicles, and drink whatever non-carbonated, sugar-free, Clear liquids I like, including Decaf coffee. There's pretty much no guess work here!

DISCLAIMER... I AM NOT YOUR DOCTOR (but I do have a degree in nutritional biochemistry). FOLLOW THE DIET PLAN YOUR DOCTOR OR NUT GAVE YOU. However, since you asked, I honestly think your diet is way too high in carbs for it to be effective in burning glycogen from your liver (a.k.a. liver shrink). Glycogen is the storage form of carbohydrate, stored in many tissues but mostly the liver. When your diet is deficient in carbohydrate, your body converts that stored glycogen to glucose, the sugar that we need for energy and cell function, thereby shrinking your liver. All that fruit, bread, crackers, and potato in your diet is recognized by your body as glucose. Since you're getting adequate glucose from your diet, your body won't detect the need to convert the glycogen in your liver to glucose- you already have enough.

After reading all your post I realized I am very lost on my diet :-( surgery scheduled for aug16) day 2 of diet. I had 2 eggs , 21/2 tbsp apple sauce, so far. dinner will be tuna fishy ( no mayonese) over salad. So that is pretty much it what I will eat. :-( salad and fish , salad and red meat or chicken :-( 9 oz per meal or per day ?

Please follow your own doctor's plan as they may have reasons for having you watch fat that other people did not have to deal with.

my surgeon did not have a pre-op diet at all except, of course, the night before surgery.

it's good to be curious about other people's pre-op diet, but really at the end of the day it is you and your surgeon and how well you followed their instructions.

Your surgeon should have provided you with very specific instructions about what you can and cannot eat on the pre-op diet. I wouldn't have been allowed apple sauce. But every plan is different. So make sure you contact your surgeon or nutritionist if you are confused or have any questions.

Apple sauce I add to it. I don't see 1 fruit on it. I am confused with the veggies.the Protein is 9 oz per day. Veggies not sure. So when I feel hungry I go for Protein. eggs for Breakfast , miso Soup today and salad, dinner protein and veggies. Lots of Water. Will call the NUT

I am not allowed the applesauce. It's a fruit, so it's high in carbohydrates that are recognized by our bodies as sugar. Check with your nutritionist. Usually salad veggies are the way to go, but limit Tomato, carrot (SKIP carrot), and onion. NO peas, corn, winter squash, potato, beets... all are too high in carbohydrate/recognized as sugar. Once again, check with your nutritionist.

Yeah, the whole idea of the pre-op diet is no/low carbs and fruit is full of sugar. So I wasn't allowed any. And I had a list of veggies I was allowed to eat, because some are deceptively high in carbs/sugar.

I was allowed unlimited amounts of leafy greens, but only allowed calorie-free dressing.

If I recall correctly it's something like 4 cups of leafy greens a day... but only lemon juice or vinegar for dressing. Once again... talk to your nutritionist!

Lemon or vinegar here as well but I'm also supposed to get in some plain Greek yogurt daily to promote good bacteria in my stomach. I mix the lemon juice and a spoon full of the yogurt and it is a pretty tasty dressing.

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

      Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
