4 weeks post op and diarrhea

Recommended Posts

So i hit the 4 week mark and I was doing great, no nausea ever, no vomiting or diarrhea. Eating regular food (limited amounts ofcourse ) getting majority of my Water and protien in, things were really looking great. Then monday morning came and i started with severe diarrhea. I mean in 12 hours o went over 30 times. Spent most of the day on the toilet because it was running out of me. I ended up in the hospital admitted due to severe dehydration. But my doc and other docs think it is due to dietary non compliance. I work night shift and I am a nurse so when I work i normally supplement with protien shakes because it is easier and quicker. The night before I only had water and protien shakes so there is no way my diarrhea was from something i ate. Has this happend to anyone else?

If you're only doing Protein, you'd be more likely to be constipated! I'm sorry the dr jumped right to noncompliance. That seems unfair. You probably had some sort of stomach bug.

Your journey dietarily was like mine, on soft solids at about 4 weeks out and no diarrhea. In fact I was still taking stool softeners at that point. It does sound more like a virus than something behavioral but you can get dumping syndrome so check the amount of sugar from your day's eating to see if you had more than usual. Same thing with lactose, some develop intolerance post op.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
