Bypass on 2/9, drinking and eating questions.

Recommended Posts

Just a little worried that after 6 days post op that I am feeling "too good" in some ways. The first 3 days I wasn't able to hardly eat or drink anything. Today I was able to drink 3/4 of a Protein Shake this morning, a 3/4 of a Jello early afternoon and 3/4 of a sugar free pudding late this afternoon. I feel like my intake is to much for this early on and worried I won't lose weight. When I eat these items. I don't feel overly full, but satisfied. I don't feel hunger so I'm unsure when to eat and if I'm eating to much! Help!

Hi, I'm one day after you and I sure know what you mean. It's been amazingly pain free though certainly uncomfortable, but it's hard to know if I've eaten too much, though I often feel pretty full very quickly. I too am able to drink 6 oz of Protein Shake Breakfast, lunch and dinner, and it is a bit difficult to get in much more than 40 oz of Water in between all that. I worry that I'm eating too much. I certainly get you!!

No, it doesn't sound like you're eating too much 6 days out at all. Your focus now should be on hitting your liquid and Protein goals. So if your work towards that, then you'll be good. If you're worried about your caloric intake then log your food/protein into my fitness pal. The range of calories should be 400-600. If you feel you're doing too much then talk to your doctor or nutritionist. They're the real experts, lol.

I also felt really good after surgery and was able to eat almost a full amount almost right away. One of my indicators that I needed to be done (before I learned the feeling) was the hiccups. I always knew that meant I needed to stop NOW. Not one more bite, but NOW!! I have been really careful about making sure that I don't eat more than the recommended. Even now I can eat a cup of food most meals, but I focus on it being mostly Protein.

I also don't generally feel hungry unless I completely skip a meal. I have learned to schedule meals and Snacks and try not to deviate. Otherwise I get hungry and then am tempted to eat too fast and then I suffer!

Good luck!

Thanks guys! I went to my post op appt today and got my butt jumped for minimal Protein intake. Water is just do easy for me! They suggested I try drinking milk instead of Protein shakes because they make me feel kinda blah. Today I managed 30grams of Protein in a shake with v8 juice. Doing 8oz of broth as I type this, will try more protein later. Is this all still normal?

I was worried too! I read that we really need to focus on measuring that early out because the nerves are still healing, we may not feel full. I'm 5 months out, today, I've lost 111 pounds and still worried I'm just going to stop losing! Thank god for this site!

I got mine on the 10th and feel the same way!

How are you supposed to even consume all that Protein with how little we're allowed to eat & drink??

I just got back from a walk and felt like I could guzzle a glass of Water. I really didn't need to sip.

Congrats. I had mine the same day & have only lost 6lbs. I guess it depends on starting weight?? I thought i may have dropped more.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
