Resolution of IBS

Recommended Posts

There is probably a thread about this somewhere, but my search function isn't working right.

Has anyone struggled with IBS pre-op and then have it resolved as a result of WLS? I have a particularly nasty case of IBS that seems to be brought on by particular foods as well as hormones and emotions. My nutritionist thought that dietary changes through the WLS process would resolve IBS, like how WLS can help resolve diabetes.

Is this even a possibility? Have you had this experience?

I had horrible IBS - D issues for years before surgery. It was to the point where I would have what I called bad stomach days at least five days a week if not every day of the week. It was truly controlling my life and I couldn't ever enjoy going out with my family or friends to dinner and a movie or what because I was miserable no matter what I ate. Since surgery (9/28/15) I have only had maybe two bad stomach days and they were not even as bad as my best day was pre op. So for me that part alone has been a miracle and has brought me a whole new ability to enjoy life.

I have awful IBS-D and still do, unfortunately. Though I think some of mine is complicated because I had my gallbladder removed. Some days it seems to improve, but other days not so much; no real reason to it. Removing pastas, rice, bread, etc. from my diet has seemed to help and I have less "poopy" days now. Good luck to you and I hope yours resolves itself!!!

I had it as well probably 3 days a week on average. The worst part was the fear. I couldn't eat anything before a flight or important meeting. It was horrible. I haven't had one single issue since surgery 16 months ago. I would do it all over again just for that. I was self pay so I feel like I got a bonus. I no longer carry diarrhea medicine in my purse. I am no longer afraid to live my life. And living it as a size 0 is icing on the cake.

Bless you heart, I hate that for you. I know how miserable living with that can be.

Yes. All those problems. All have resolved. Thank God.

Thank you for the question. I was just about to ask the same question. Today is an IBS day- and wondering if WLS would help or hurt it. I appreciate all the responses. It looks like mixed bag.

I asked my surgeon about this as I also suffer from IBS. He told me that it should have really no affect on it - but that some people see relief from it due to their dietary changes.

I have IBS, and since surgery(6/15/15) have only had a few days of bad tummy days. Had my gallbladder removed(12/28/15) and have not had one single day of bad tummy days since. I do not eat any Pasta, rice, only toasted bread(maybe once a month). My dr said that the sleeve might help this issue and it has. I am glad and feel as though it is a bonus of all my hard work.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
