Does anyone have experience with Shirataki noodles? They're almost no calorie and very very low carb. I'm almost 8 weeks post-op RNY and I'm looking for some variety. How would a newish pouch handle them? I'm worried about them swelling but otherwise I've heard great things about them. If anyone has had them please let me know how it went :)

Ok, so I pulled the nutritional data because let's face it I am Italian and I miss my Pasta. Yes I have had Pasta however my pouch does not like it.

I have tried high Protein pasta and get the same result.

These Shirataki noodles have no nutritional value at all. The thing that is bad for someone so newly post op is that they will expand in your tiny pouch taking up precious room for good Protein and good carbs like vegetables.

According to the data because they are made from Water they will swell.

I personally would not waste the space in my pouch. Down the road you can try some whole grain or high protein pasta. At least you would get some nutritional value out of them.

I hope this makes sense.

Unless you're used to eating them, I'd avoid for now. If you haven't become accustomed to inulin, even if you have a normal-sized tummy, you might have (ahem) digestive issues with that volume of insoluble Fiber shooting through your GI track. With the surgery? You might as well be eating styrofoam packing peanuts.

If you decide in a few months that you're willing to brave them (because you need the bulk?) make absolutely sure that you rinse and rinse and rinse them, and then dry-fry them in a pan. Otherwise, they have a sort of unpleasant slimy texture and a weird fishy taste to them. They work OK with chilis or stir fries where you've got other strong flavors to mask them, but I dunno...I just can't imagine they'd be worth it.

If you're really hurting for that Pasta feel, I'd go with a Paderno spiralizer and a zucchini. Boil that in salted Water for 30-45 seconds, rinse, and then use right away. You can get really close on texture, and the taste is bland enough that whatever you're eating it with will be the dominant flavor. Also, easy nutrition!

I had them before surgery. They are gross. They stink and no matter what you do to them, I can still smell how they smell when you open the bag.

Zucchini noodles are far superior and cheaper.

I think they are disgusting. I would rather have zucchini noodles or Spaghetti Squash.

I agree with all the others. They were gross, save your money I wish I had.

Personally, I do not like them at all. What I've been doing in place of Pasta is spiraled zucchini. If you bake it in the oven with whatever sauce you use and a little cheese it tastes great. Even got my dad to eat it!

I have tried them but didn't find that they were worth the space they took up in my stomach. I prefer the spaghetti squash. However, when I did eat them they didn't taste that bad to me. I sautéd them in a little olive oil with fresh garlic and put some homemade spaghetti sauce on them and another time topped them with grilled shrimp. They just filled me up too fast and I couldn't get my Protein in for that meal.

It wouldn't hurt to try them I would just wait until you are further out.

When I've eaten authentic Shirataki noodles made from yam only, that I used to get at my Japanese market, they would come out of me looking exactly the same way they went in. O.o Exactly. Find out which type of shirataki you can get.

The best thing I have used, is the spiralizer and made zucchini noodles and it's heavenly. Absolutely heavenly.

Awesome! Thank you so so much everyone! I love how there are so many people here for me :D :D :D Zucchini noodles would be amazing, I don't want to put anything in that'll swell or be weird lol. Exactly what info. I was looking for.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
