Has anyone had the mini gastric sleeve - minimally invasive with 1 incision?

Recommended Posts

I'm scheduled for the mini gastric sleeve procedure with Dr. Todd McCarty in Dallas in February. His approach involves using the Natural Orifice Trans-endoluminal Endoscopic Surgery ( NOTES) that basically involves a scope through a tube down your throat and a small incision around your belly button. The portion of the stomach is removed through the tube in your throat. The amount of stomach removed is a bit less than typical gastric sleeve surgery and this is designed for people with a lower BMI than typical sleeve surgery.

It is supposed to have an easier recovery and less post-op pain, but with the same results as traditional gastric sleeve surgery.

Has anyone had this type of procedure?

Also, I'm not telling anyone but a couple of friends (pre-surgery). Is it possible to keep this a secret if you won't be seeing any of them for 2 weeks after your surgery?

I do not have experience with the procedure you are having, but I have done my surgery and didn't even tell my husband. He went to Chili the week after I had my surgery and he still hasn't figured out what is going on in my world. I told a couple of people at work but that is it. I have been able to keep things at a minimum by telling people I had my gall bladder removed, just a minor omissioin as I did have my gall bladder removed. Most people think this is why I have given up bread, rice, Pasta, fat...etc and then I just tell them that the liquid diet I did right after surgery must have made my stomach smaller and that's why I don't hardly eat anything any more. I eat a lot of Soup at lunch when we go out and take my lunch if we don't have vendors in.

Now, that said. I didn't have any complications and was back at work three days later. I went out and walked the dogs and was getting around with no issues. If you have any issues it may not be easy to keep things a secret. I can tell you that I went out to lunch with some co-workers at three weeks out and ate something that didn't agree with me - while I don't think it was super obvious, I had to high tail it to the bathroom!!!! You need to be prepared for situations like that if you keep this a secret.

If I may ask, what is the harm in telling your SO about your decision to have surgery? Not judging at all, more curious.

Never heard of the throat scope surgery before, but I have heard of the single incision approach. Seems more dangerous to me. That being said, I was a low BMI regular sleeve and was back to normal in 3 days. I could and have kept it a secret from most people. But not from the man I love and who loves me. Those kind of secrets are just not what healthy relationships are made of.

I guess I never really thought about that....and let me also add that when I didn't tell my husband, we are in the middle of a divorce and he would just judge saying I was getting surgery so I could get skinny and find a new man - NOT what I am doing at all....so while we are technically still married, we are not really in a relationship.

Is that right?

My wishful thinking is that I can get to a pre-surgery weight and would be happy with 30 more pounds - even though 35-40 would be ideal. My total weight loss should be about 40-50 pounds - which is a significant amount on someone 5'1".

I really am not looking to be judged by someone who doesn't know my struggle or my history. I'm medically qualified for the surgery.

I really don't want to be talked out of it with remarks about how I should just embrace who I am. The SO other is just a boyfriend and we're not in a committed, life-long relationship. My family is very judgmental and I wouldn't be getting support from them one way or the other.

That's the best reply and I hadn't thought about that. I'm happy with telling them after it is done.

Well dang- I have never heard of a mini sleeve but wish I had! !! I had about 60-70 to lose and some days I feel like I wish I hadn't done the surgery. Like I had an itch on my foot so I cut my foot off . Hahaa I am ten weeks out and still just not really eating more than a bite here or there . I currently feel like what I did was too drastic for MY situation but also know I couldn't of lost it otherwise . I am hoping to feel better about it as time passes. I have had a lot of nausea- so my experience has been challenging. Again- that was all me - not you of course

Can't wait to hear about the mini sleeve!! Sounds so interesting. Great luck to you!

Oh and I have told a few people but have found they just really don't understand well. They can't i guess they are all life long skinny people . It is def possible to keep secret - I went to my kids open house a couple of days later

Great luck to you!!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
