Fear of Losing

Recommended Posts

Hey guys I'm new to BP. I'm in the process of getting cleared for VSG. I have been reaching & getting inspiration from various sources. I know it may seem a little superficial but I'm extremely worried about loose skin after surgery. I've seen some after pics that scared the s**t out of me. I get it, loose skin should be the least of my concern. But I think about it a lot. I've seen people who have tighten back up easily with no evidence of ever being overweight then there are others with extra baggage. I've read where Protein, Water intake, weight training and other things can reduce excess loose skin. There's even a new show on TLC titled "Skin Tight" where women get plastic surgery. I'm just interested about women's perspectives/remedies for loose skin.

FYI: I may be overly conscious because I'm a single young lady who has to deal with this generation's dating scene. ???? don't be too harsh.

Hi.....and welcome to the forum. I like to tell new folks that opinions and tact will vary, but we mean well.

At the age of 64, i do have some droop, but not enough to make plastic surgery worth spending my Social Security on. If I had money to burn, maybe I would, but I don't have to impress anyone.

However, if I were younger with decades of dating and relationships ahead of me, I would start saving money for plastics. Most insurance plans only cover the skin removal if the surgeon can prove medical necessity, like infection under the skin that does not respond to other treatments.

I have not heard of anyone's insurance willing cover the Tummy Tuck, which is surgical tightening of the lower abdominal muscles. Both procedures are pretty drastic, but I think of all of our bariatric brothers and sisters on this forum, who have had the surgery, few if any have expressed any regret.

One thing you have to your advantage is that the younger you are, the more likely your skin will cooperate in tightening up on its own. If I were you, I would just cross that bridge when I get to eat. You may not need plastics at all. Then if you saved up money for it, just spend it on a fierce new wardrobe or treat yourself to a vacation.

Well, let me tell you waiting till your older doesn't make it any better.

Yes, loose skin! I have lots of it and I didn't think it would bother me as much as it does.

Yes, I would much rather have this loose skin than the 140lbs I have lost but the loose skin really does make me look and feel bigger than I am.

I am 52 and because I lost and gained hundreds of pounds over the years, my skin is not bouncing back at all. I will have to have a lot of plastics to resolve my loose skin and it will take years before I can afford to do it. So for now, I will be working on stabilizing weight loss then I will prioritize what really bothers me the most.

You are not shallow or vain for worrying about it. It is a reality. Maybe not as badly for you because you are younger and if you have not done a ton of yo yo dieting you should get some back. It also depends on how much you have to lose.

For me, taking care of the plastics will ultimately be the last part of my weight loss journey.

Good luck to you! Better you do this now vs. waiting until you are older like me. My one regret is that I kept trying to do it without help and wasted many years causing damage to my skin, joints and spine.

How much do you have to lose?

Youth, genetics, and how much you lose govern whether or not you have loose skin left over, and how much. Certainly having a fit set of muscles underneath will help the sppearance, but whether or not you get it is really outside of your control.

I agree that with your degree of concern over it, it would be wise to start saving now for plastic surgery. I know I am, because I know up front I will need and want it. I'm not young, and my future loose skin won't bother my husband in the least, but it will bother me, so I'm saving for it.

The other thing to understand is that while you're in the period where you are waiting to get your surgery done, it's really common to have concerns about the "what-if"s. If it weren't loose skin, it would be something else, and in time there may be other concerns that worry you more than the skin issue does now. That's entirely normal, because you're waiting to make a big change in your life. Just know that once you're no longer waiting, other things will occupy your mind.

Good luck on your journey!

How much do you have to lose?

80-90 lbs.

That's not bad. I lost 95, I'm sure I'm quite a bit older than you, and the only problem area I have is my tummy. And that's not even too terrible (although I have considered plastics for it). Look at my pics in my profile and you'll see my skin isn't too bad. I have been exercising and lifting weights along resistance training for the last 14 months, so I think that has helped. At least I like to think it did ;)

In my opinion, the longer you wait the worse it will be.

If you wait another 10-20-30 years you will most likely be a lot bigger and your skin will be less resilient.

I agree. You will have much better results if you do it now. Especially since you have less than 100 lbs to lose.

Thanks for responding. Great advice to start saving for plastic surgery. I've read that if you have too much loose skin some insurance companies cover the removal, but I'm sure that is no small feat.

I'm a huge worrywart. Something that has also occupied my mind is the potential of blood clots.

Wow you look great! I'll be 23 next month you don't look that much older. Resistance training is an amazing idea. Have you tried shape wear for your tummy i.e. waist trainers/corsets?

Thanks! And I'm old enough to be your mom, lol. Havn't tried waist trainers or corsets. Only Spanx ;) It's really mostly skin I can't do much about without surgical intervention.

Oh I can totally understand where you are coming from. I happen to be extremely lucky in that I already have a relationship that I have been in for ten years so I am not hunting. Unfortunately He is ALOT older than me , so it is realistic that in five-ten years I will be single again.... Hopefully the men that will be in my prospective dating pool will be comfortable with my saggy baggy skin. I will have plastics eventually, but obviously the results won't come close to being as nice as women that had reconstruction earlier.

With that being said, I think if I were in your shoes I would get the best nutrition/ hydration exercise/ strength training I could afford. I would invest in good lotions and moisturizers to combat aging my face. And put the rest of my disposable income into an account for plastics. You might not even need it , but at least it will be there if you feel you do need it.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
