Serious Concern

Recommended Posts

My wife just went thru Mandatory CPR training at her work. A girl she works with has had RNY and she won't allow the instructor to demonstrate on her because she said she heard it won't work on her because of the surgery.

Does CPR work on lapbanded people and what about the (oh God I don't now how to spell it so her goes) Hymlick. Will it work???

My Dr said he doesn't believe it will.

Looking for someone who may know this because I think its important for us to know. I realize that due to our extensive chewing of food were are less prone to choke but damn you never know. And I don't really care if doing this on me blows out the band. That can be repaired. Can't come baack from death. (My luck I'll come back in another live as a person with anirexia and spend my whole life trying to gain weight.)

Anyone with any information I'd appreciate it

Greg,

Dom Mills telephone number is 800-624-4261 ext. 4546. Why don't you give him a call and ask him about that. We need to get an answer straight out of the horses mouth.

Ok,

Just got off the phone with Don. Great guy.

#1 remember that neither Don nor I are Dr.'s and this should not be taken as medical advise.

The hymlick is designed to force air from the LUNGS not the stomach so there should not be much of an effect on the band. Although to preform the hymlick they grab you around the abdomon and force up hard to push the air out of the lungs. This may possibly cause injry to the band but Don believes and I agree that if this causes band damage it probably has caused ,by force, other damage and you'd be looking at seeing medical personal for treatment.

CPR is fine as the compression are over the heart and the air blown in goes to the lungs.

Just remember that when we get something stuck in our stomas it will not effect our breahting and trying to cough the product out of the stoma is better idea then trying to have someone force air up the stamoch by squeezing.

hope this helps.

Thanks Greg! It's those little things that we all forget that can happen. Like I always have said, if you have a question, ask it and somehow we always find the answer!

That is the funniest thing I ever read.

It seems to me that the band would not hinder the effectiveness of the Heimlich Maneuver. The Heimlich Maneuver is done on someone with something stuck in the windpipe, not the esophagus. Pushing firmly on our stomachs might, I guess, do something to the band or tubing, but the effect of dislodging stuck food should still be accomplished.

So saying "it doesn't work" on banded patients makes no sense to me.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
