IBS and GERD

Recommended Posts

I had severe acid reflux (GERD) before surgery. I had RNY 32 months ago and the GERD went into remission ever since surgery. Normally sleeve is not recommended for GERD patients because it can make the GERD condition worse.

Thank you for the info. I can't wait for the day to Not have any Issues. I was told by a few that it depends on how bad your GERD is. However lately I was told NO Sleeve because of It. So RNY it will be for me! :)

I have had GERD my entire life. My RNY surgery is February 16. Is it typical for it to go away right after surgery, since you no longer have a big stomach to hold all the acid? My anxiety is kicking in since I start the liver reduction diet on Tuesday, and there is soo much acid right now... take Nexium daily, and don't want to have to buy more if I don't have to. My insurance "prefers" that I buy it OTC.

After surgery my surgeon prescribed Omeprazole (Prilosec) for the first year after surgery. This was not for GERD but for healing my stomach. So I was not officially able to tell that the GERD was gone until after I stopped using Omeprazole. I am 32 months post-op RNY and no sign of it.

Also some of the symptoms of dumping syndrome mimic the effects of GERD.

I had IBS before surgery and the symptoms have gone away. I am 8 months out and have only had a problem when my gallbladder went bad around Dec and was removed Dec 29, 2015 and I have had no problems since

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
