Needing help to make a decision ?

Recommended Posts

Please help me ? I am considering having the gastric sleeve op. I am overweight at 5"4inches I weigh 13.5 stone. I know this is obese but I can lose the weight. The only problem being as soon as I lose it I put it back on as I have to take steroids quite regular and these bloat me and increase my appetite. This leaves me yo yo dieting which gets me down as I am mostly overweight. I am thinking the sleeve would keep the weight off me and may even help my asthma but is it a big step to take ? Please tell me your thoughts and experience on this ???

Definitely learn as much as you can and talk to your surgeon about what is best for you. You mention that you take steroids. That is definitely something you need to discuss with your surgeon.

Best of luck in making your decision. Keep reading and asking questions.

For sure check with your doctor and do some independent research on medications and weight. Because of neuropathies, I occasionally have to take Lyrica. The last time (November) I gained ten pounds in twelve days, so I just stopped and endured until I could get treatment at the pain clinic this week. I have made too much progress to gain it back so fast. Otherwise, I am pleased with my sleeve and feel so much better.

Due to my age and inability to exercise because of back and knee pain, and never being able to keep the weight off with natural means or weight loss pills, the sleeve was and is my best choice. I have seen excellant results with my two sons having sleeves. Good luck with you and your choices.

I met my surgeon last monday and he explained to us that the losing and gaining is why people like us need this surgery. The surgery doesn't just change the size of your stomach, it also changes different hormones and chemicals in our body. You need to speak with a professional to help you decide so you can get all the facts first. I would meet with your family doc if you have one and discuss it with them. Good luck!!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
