Corsetry and sleeve. Too soon?

Recommended Posts

I do a lot of costuming and I have many corsets. When can I wear those again? I'm thinking that 6 weeks is the minimum to heal, but maybe more? If you wear a steel boned corset, any comment or advice?

Corsets have this fantastic ability to make your stomach constriction even tighter. In terms of purely healing, six weeks should be fine. You are likely going to have a very difficult time eating much of anything at all while you are wearing your corsets. I discovered this after plastics procedures when the compression garment not only compressed my skin, but also squashed my stomach to the point that I had a very hard time eating for a few weeks. I also notice that oddly a few pair of tights that I have where the band is high-waisted also compress at exactly the place where my stomach is and it is virtually impossible to eat without barfing when I'm wearing those stockings.

So...6 weeks you'll be fine to wear them, just be prepared for extra constriction.

I do 18th-century living history, both as a hobby and part of my job. I wore a pair of lightly boned stays, laced loosely, about 7 or 8 weeks post-op, but only for a few hours. I wore my fully-boned stays for a weekend about a month later with no issues. They are boned with German plastic artificial whalebone.

Like @@AvaFern mentioned, wearing a corset after being sleeved will reduce your stomach capacity even more. I have found that I can only manage 1/2 a Protein bar when I'm wearing my stays and have to be even more conscious of taking small bites and chewing thoroughly, or I feel rather urpy.

I eager to get my groove back, but working hard on self control. Want to lace up... Gotta wait three more weeks.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
