Insomnia after Sleeve?

Recommended Posts

It may be unrelated, but anyone else have insomnia after surgery?

@@WalkOnWaking - no, but I have fought insomnia off/on since my forties. It has gotten worse and at times I don't mind. Maybe you can take some melatonin and see if you can kick your "sleep" clock back into rhythm. Call you doctors office and see if they recommend anything.

If you are back to having caffeine I would back off on it as well. It doesn't affect me for sleeping like some.

good luck

I started dealing with it right at the 2 week post-op mark, never having had insomnia before. I wondered if my Vitamins might have had something to do with it, so I change when I took them to first thing in the morning and around mid-day. Not taking Vitamins later in the evening seems to have resolved it for me.

I can't take melatonin. I tried to a few years back (was working a lot of late nights so kinda felt 'jet lagged'). It gave me horrible vivid disturbing dreams. Found out later my sister and mother have the same reaction, so perhaps it runs in the family.

I don't drink a lot of caffeine, but have started back up again. Maybe 1 or 2 cups of hot tea in the morning per week. I get addicted very easily to caffeine so am careful not to overdo it.

But perhaps that is what is causing it. I'll switch back to herbal tea and see if that helps. Thanks for the suggestions!

I hope you can resume your normal sleeping position soon. I am a side sleeper and was able to sleep like that while still at the hospital. Hurt getting into and out of it, but once I was settled in, no issues.

I even asked my surgeon when it would be ok to sleep on my side again. His response 'whenever you feel comfortable enough to do so.' I told him I was worried about messing up stitches internally or whatever. He said, 'Have more confidence in my sewing skills!' hahahahaha

Me!!! I had my surgery on the 28th and have yet to get a full night's sleep! Tonight has been the worst of them all (hence the reason I searched this topic out to see if I'm alone). I usually go to bed at 9 and get up at 6. Well, I got up at 3 yesterday morning and I'm nowhere near sleepy to go to bed tonight and its almost 3 hours past my normal bedtime. I hope this is temporary because when I go back to work I have for to have my sleep in order to function!! Good luck to the rest of you!!

I struggled with this too. I had the doctor check my thyroid med because I thought that was the cause and it came back okay. It eventually got better around month 6.

I have the same problem! Doesn't matter if I go to bed at 9 or midnight, I'm wide awake at 3 am... Sucks. It's hard to function when I have to go to work for 12 hours when I've been awake so early. I've tried melatonin with no help. Benadryl works but then I feel hungover for hours after I get up. I can't take it if I have to go to work.

Me too. I've started taking 2 Tylenol PMs and I'm back to normal.

Wow...same here. I'm hoping it's due to not working and hoping things will return to normal when I go back to work next week

I'm 12 days P.O.

Low carb diets will mess with a good night sleep, especially in the beginning

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
