Pre-operation EKGs, ECGs, stress tests, etc. - your experiences?

Recommended Posts

I'm not aware of having any heart issues, but I'm concerned that they'll find something during my pre-operation tests that will either push back my date, which is 01/08/16, or rule me out of having WLS at all.

Don't get me wrong: I'd rather know than not know, but it would still bother me to have to wait, especially since I've already arranged for time off from work and whatnot.

Did anyone have experiences like this, where your surgery was delayed, or even canceled? I'd be interested to hear how the process went.

I have a cardiac history, 2 stents, placed over 2 years ago. I needed cardiology clearance and that was all. In fact she told me she thought I was a great candidate for WLS. And I am old, 59, so I am sure they took that into account. However surgery went well, no problems. Maybe your docs are very cautious.

this is major surgery. i had to jump thru a lot of hoops. my insurance denied me at first. had to be cleared by heart and lung drs. because of apnea. once approved by insurance, my surgery date was set. pre surgery just met with anesthesia. once to this point it's pretty much a go. it seems like a lot, but this is really a big deal. trust me, it is worth it!

Hello the surgeon I went to required a full long list of tests EKG endoscopy X-rays blood work sleep apnea test etc etc according to others I've met who have had a gastric surgery it's all required by the surgeons any issues found do not nessecarily mean u can't have surgery for example I had a severe sleep apnea which I already knew as it was diagnosed 4 years prior to surgery I also have AFib none of this made me ineligible for surgery I think they just want to know if any issues are there that could cause a problem during or after surgery or anesthesia kind of a cover their asses type of thing they don't want to be sued so they want any issues to be controlled ahead of time and to be prepared in the OR which is a good thing if there is a potential for a problem they can prepare for that just in case I know it seems tedious and it is however it's for your own benefit good luck

My heart doctor told me I had an extra heart beat and was still cleared. He said I didn't have anything to worry about because my heart was strong and seemed normal. He asked me to see him in year after surgery.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. It sounds like I don't need to worry quite as much as I am. Everything has been ridiculously easy up to now, so I think I had just been waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Truly, thanks everyone! Not too much longer until my day!

@@The_Jeff - wouldn't you rather them be MORE cautious than not?

I had to do a stress test because they picked up a blip on my EKG. I THOUGHT I had a MVP (mitro valve prolapse) because I had been told that years ago (1987 or so). Turns out, I don't.

They are your medical team. Let them be cautionary and test and follow their orders...

Congrats on getting to this point :D

Stop worrying. Won't do you any good anyway. You will be fine. I had to do all the tests too and it all came out fine :)

Good luck to you!!!

The clearances are designed so that the surgeon knows what is going on with you not necessarily to keep you from having surgery. The more information, the better prepared and safer your surgery.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
