It's my (birthday) and I'll cry if I want to...

Recommended Posts

Today is my birthday...normally a cause for celebration...but today I am sad. I never realized how much food was involved in my birthday celebration. I am currently 4 weeks post-op and can't really enjoy any of the foods normally associated with a birthday.

  • No steak and baked potato or pizza for dinner.
  • No buttered popcorn and coke at a movie.
  • No cake and ice cream after the gifts.

I know that having the sleeve surgery was my decision and I don't regret it in the least, but it is going to take some time for me to not emotionally want food. I made it through Thanksgiving just fine (which occurred 1 week after my surgery) and don't feel the food pressures of Christmas either. However, my birthday is a different story and I am struggling.

Would love some support from my fellow Bariatric Pals today.

For celebrations around here, we usually make a sugar-free cheesecake topped with fresh berries. I just scoop the custard filling off of the graham cracker crust.

Oh well...

You'll just have to settle for feeling better, looking better and being healthier...

Birthday cake and Coke is a small price to pay...

Happy Birthday!!!

I completely understand. I too have been mourning the loss of my best friend, food. It is an emotional breakup and everything reminds me of all the fun we (food and I) had together. To make it worse, other people are still best friends with food so I have to watch them have the relationship I used to have.

I am only 11 days out but have been very emotional since the surgery and cry every day. I'm crying for the certain comfort that food brought me. Crying because I don't know what to do with the time that I usually spent eating. Crying because I am no longer one of the gang that can shove down 6 pieces of pizza and still want ice cream for dessert.

Or maybe what I'm really crying for is the fact that I let food rule my life for so long. I was one of those eaters that would inhale a box and Cookies and then feel bad. Eat a pint of ice cream and wonder what in the h*** is wrong me.

I am taking back my power and food is no longer in charge. It is scary and emotional but I'll make it. And you will too!

You summed up exactly how I feel!! Thank you so much for your understanding and willingness to share your feelings with me. It really means a lot to have others share their experiences and offer their support during this time. We can do this!!!

And I am honored that your first post was to my thread. Thank you!!

Happy Birthday! I really don't mourn food, I don't look at it as if I will never have and enjoy those foods again... I just choose to not have them now. Some day we will choose to have those treats, and work them into our daily calories/carbs so that we feel no guilt in eating them.

My birthday was yesterday, btw!

I know it's tough, but looking at the big picture, those foods didn't really represent comfort. What they really represent is bad health and aching joints and pain, both internal and external. It's true what they say about "a moment on the lips, but a lifetime on the hips" or any other place on the body you so choose.

What you're giving up in exchange for extra years in your life cannot compare. Hang in there and here's wishing you a very happy birthday!

Happy Birthday. I so understand how you're feeling; I too miss good food. I'm a bit of a gourmet cook and I cooked dinner for friends last night and had marinated some beautiful cod fish and was looking forward to something good to eat (however my husband overcooked the fish on the grill so the only part of the meal that I could eat was inedible). A nutritionist told me "Nothing tastes as good as thin feels." After so many "diets" over so many years I want to feel what being thin feels like again. I think I had my surgery around the same time as you, Nov. 19, and still struggling with how fast to eat and what to eat. It all tastes so boring but I'm keeping at it. You'll do fine. Get out and enjoy the day. Embrace the changes you are making and find something to fill the food void. Me, I'm going to the pool and swim/jog for about an hour. It has been the best part of my day since I was cleared for it.

@@Fatty McFatster,

My dear FMF, you don't need cake and ice cream when you can have a birthday kiss on the noggin from moi. Or, to put it another way, "Pick one." [And be careful of what you say.]

Many more to you.

@@liannatx, a very merry UnBirthday to you! Only a day late. Don't be shy next year, okay?

First off Happy Birthday!! It is a day to celebrate!!! It's the first Birthday of the New You!!

2ndly - I can empathize with you. I was feeling exactly like you felt when my birthday came around. I was 3 months post op and even though I could eat food I couldn't eat the way that I used to. My husband and I went out to my favorite Italian restaurant and I had 2 bites off of his plate and called it good. I couldn't eat the entire plate full, plus have my favorite desert and 2 or 3 glasses of wine. I was a little sad by it. BUT... after dinner when I got home and put on my Medium pajama pants I didn't feel so bad anymore. (I have always been an XL or a XXL) Also, when I realized that my gut didn't hurt from over stuffing it like it usually does, the feeling bad got a little better.

I was also a best friend to food and will admit that still sometimes when I see others eat it makes me a little sad but it gets much better over time. You are still going through the hormone crazy phase and once that passes you will feel so much better.

Good Luck and do something special for you on your Birthday like buying that item you have been eyeing or if you are like me binge watch some show on Netflix :)

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
