If you are worried about dehydration I can recommend pedialyte. It comes in different forms - powder to dissolve in Water, freezer pops or ready to drink in a bottle. It quickly replenishes liquids and electrolytes. I also used "Smartwater" in my first couple of weeks after surgery.

I was in a similar situation as your wife and had a hard time to get my liquids in. One 'trick' that helped me was using 1 oz cups , fill 4 for each hour. I tried to finish one cup every 15 min. Honestly it was hard in the beginning but it helped me to advance.

Hope that helps :-)

I agree about the one ounce cups...not only did it help me initially sip small amounts, but it motivated me! Try it and see!

Hi There,

My wife was sleeved on 12/28 and I wanted to see if anyone had some tips to help her out with food/calories? Her surgery was late in the day Monday and while she's been feeling better each day she's still not really eating (drinking) much of anything. She has a decent amount of Water a day and enjoyed a little watered down gatorade today but she hasn't been able to get more than one Protein drink down a day (20 to 25g of protein) and today did manage some Soup too but she's still only had probably 400 or so calories today which worries me some.

Any advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Rather than start a thread I figured I would post here since some stuff on here was useful already.

I would try ice chips and watered down Gatorade. Use the 2 oz medicine cups or Dixie cups so it doesn't seems overwhelming to your wife. Try a variety of Protein Shake flavors so it's not like the same thing day in and day out.

I had my sleeve surgery the same day dec 28th my surd hydration was more important than Protein for the first week. today was the first day I was able to drink an entire pint of Water from a bottle took me 2.5 hours and I felt a little bloated afterwards but it went in. as for protein intake I just finished the first Protein shake I started when I came home. just sip an oz at a time till you can handle more and it does get to be more have you tried any other forms of protein besides shakes? last night I made a can of cambells chicken noodle soup ran it thru a strainer and drank the broth was able tout down 6 oz it tasted so good after being on a water only diet. my kids ate the noodles and chicken. I also found that walking helped me a lot as to gas and taking more food

Thanks everyone for the advice! She had more to drink today (liquid and protein) so feeling a bit better now as she is acting more like her old self which is good. Hopefully tomorrow I can get her over 50g or Protein since she still only hit about 40g today.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
