Post-WLS Lifestyle Guides and Resources

Recommended Posts

For many of us, our life after WLS is radically different from our pre-WLS life.

What I would like to know is what media and resources you have found particularly helpful in creating that new life. Are there cookbooks you go back to over and over? Do you read particular magazines for information and/or inspiration? What about self-help books? Documentaries? Websites? YouTube Channels? DVDs?

Whether related to fitness and nutrition, mental and spiritual health, aromatherapy, style guides for dressing your new figure, or even cleaning and organizing your home, what has helped you create the life you want post-WLS?

Honestly, this website has been my most used resource so far. Before surgery and in the five or so week healing period, I kind of had tunnel vision and just concentrated on making it through each day. That worked for me then.

Now that I'm further out, I'm working on building habits for the long term. It really helps hear from people who are further out. I lurk in the veterans forum a good deal, just soaking it in.

One of the healthy habits I'm working on is cooking protein-based meals at home that I like. I've used allrecipes.com quite a bit for that.

Finally, my favorite design/housekeeping type blog is apartmenttherapy.com. It's been a new hobby of mine to create a comfortable space for myself at home. It lifts my mood and kind of helps me feel calmer.

Mellie May on youtube! She has a LOT of videos, documenting every step of her journey in a really kind/candid way. It was so helpful to me and really calmed my anxiety about the whole thing. I would highly recommend checking her out. :D

I enjoy listening to podcasts. My favorite is created by Reeger Cortell. It is called Weight Loss Surgery Podcasts. It is informational and inspirational.

I love apartmenttherapy, too. I have always lived in small spaces and that site has great ideas.

Definitely! It's just something I enjoy and it's cool now to have friends asking my advice on how to lay out their furniture, make a small kitchen work, etc.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
