Anyone else NOT on a pre-op diet?

Newly sleeved on Nov 4th. No pre-op diet required. Just routine nothing by mouth after midnight the night before.

Seriously? ^ im pretty sure I've got a great surgeon and ill have 2 week pre op starting 11/30

It's tough evaluating these guys for us non-medical laymen (and it's not even easy for the surgeons themselves to evaluate each other if they don't see them in action in the OR, or can evaluate their handiwork after the fact). The usually suggested tools of state medical boards, yelp, online forums, etc. can give some indications but are ultimately of limited value - much of our legal system of settlements, arbitration and mediation comes with gag orders that keep many negative reports out of the public eye.

In this imperfect world, what I have found to be one of the more effective filters for VSG surgeons is whether they have extensive DS experience. As the DS is one of the more technically challenging procedures around, it tends to attract the more skilled surgeons, and as the DS uses the sleeve as its basis, these guys are the most experienced with the sleeve with most having done them for 10-20 years or more (as opposed to most others who have been doing them for maybe 3-5 years, adding them to their RNY based practices, which involves a somewhat distinct skillset.

Observing these forums over the years, and chatting with lots of patients around the country, one notices a pattern that these DS surgeons generally don't do require these extensive pre-op "liver shrinking" diets that many surgeons require. One can conclude that these guys have developed skills or tools that negate the need for these diets, and that the OP has likely fallen in with one of these more experienced surgeons (or one who has been training with them.)

We also see similar disparity with post-op dietary progressions, with some limiting their patients to liquids for a month or more while others have progressed to steak by then - guess which programs tend to come from these more experienced DS/sleeve guys?

Given that the DS only has a 1-2% market share in the bariatric world, this filter leaves out a lot of surgeons who can be considered "great" or top drawer (say, top quintile, or 20%) but I don't know how to properly evaluate them against those who are merely "good" or "so-so" (though if one is considering a surgeon who has been changing jobs/practices every year or two, I would keep looking....)

I have to admit that I'm jealous of all of you that didn't have to do the pre-op diet or were able to consume a lot more calories than I am allowed. I have to be on mostly liquids and between 500-700 calories per day with very low carbs, no sugar, and very low fat.

I am now on Day 11 and just 3 more days to go until my surgery.

And I was feeling guilty that I wanted to eat an Apple...that's right...an Apple as my last meal tonight before I am on 2 days of only Clear Liquids. I don't feel so guilty for wanting to eat an apple after reading this thread. So thanks!!! lol.

My Surgeon is the head of the bariatric program and he requires the liquid diet not sure if its cuz hes old school or if it works for him. Also his stages progress quick I know I get a Protein Drink in the hospital day one

don't have a pre-op 1 month or 2 week diet.

i asked doc if i needed pre-op diet

he said no, he doesn't require it

i shoud have put myself on my own pre-op :blink:

only liquid Protein shakes, Water, etc

would have given myself a jump on WLS

instead i put myself on a food funeral and gained 4 lbs :angry:

oh well!!!!

Yeah one thing I like about the pre-op diet is that it helps prepare me for what's ahead.

As much as I hated my two week pre-op diet, I lost 12 pounds. So at 11 weeks out, I've lost over 58 pounds, and would only be at 46 pounds without my pre-op diet.

On another note, I hope most people are vetting their surgeons much more thoroughly that just deciding that the "good ones" don't require a pre-op diet. What a ridiculous post.

I thought I'd answered this topic but can't see it anywhere. I don't have a pre-op diet either, just reduce certain suppliers etc and no food the day before because I need to do my preop tests then. I thought it was because I'm travelling to get my surgery so they condense my preop stuff but I guess not.

I also have no pre-op diet, though my surgeon said it's a good idea to use this time to practice restricted intake, as well as figuring out what supplements, shakes, Meal Replacements, etc, aren't horrible.

A lot is due to my weight though, and my being a low-risk candidate for surgery. If I was heavier with comorbidities then a more strictly controlled diet would increase my chances for a simple and successful surgery.

I didn't have one either. I was pretty savvy at that point after months of research, and asked him why no pre op diet since I heard shrinking the liver for surgery was the reason. He stated he had gone to a conference where they explained that the actual amount that the liver shrinks is so small, it really makes no difference in the outcome of the surgery.

I was just thankful I didn't have to deal with it!

They also say it has to do w/ reducing the amount of visceral fat around the organs but who knows at this point.

      Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

      2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

        I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

        I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation.
