Worried I can't do the pre-op diet!

Recommended Posts

So far....just shy of 4 weeks past surgery.....my taste preferences haven't changed. Same Protein drinks that tasted good pre-op are the same ones I like now. Same flavorings I put in broth are still just like they were prior.

The pre-op diet sucked.....BUT, there were a lot of benefits beyond the reason the surgeon emphasized (liver shrinking for safer surgery).

I'd been losing weight all along throughout the months leading up to surgery as I simply wanted to get the weight OFF. I'm mentally done with being physically heavy and the issues that it created in my life. I didn't give a crap how the weight came off.....or when it came off. It seemed silly to wait until surgery to get it off. Losing weight was the goal....not waiting around to start losing weight.

Anyway...the low calorie diet my NUT had me on was okay because it did offer me a calorie budget to spend how I wanted. I found that Proteins and fats would keep hunger at bay and focused my spending there each day.

Weight loss went slow but steady.

Hitting the pre-op diet of low carb Protein shakes really amplified the loss experienced.

I think it's a great gut check to see if you are ready. You are about to have significant surgery....that can't be reversed......in order to lose weight. It will NOT work if your mind isn't fully engaged and embracing the process.....providing the discipline and committed to the effort. If you can't reach this point then maybe for time is needed......more counseling.....more focus to reach the point of 110% commitment.

I've heard of some people going through the motions in the months leading up to surgery and then something happens as they are recovering.....a dedication for lack of a better term. They get behind the idea and they work through it successfully. Maybe that's what will happen with you.

Nothing is easy about this process that I've seen.

Folks calling it the easy way out are ignorant as hell.

I could see early on that this was in no way easy. When I was referred many months ago... I was so offended. I thought please I don't need this! Denial! Then I went to the seminar and the NUT appointments just for information. Truth is I've spent my whole life fat and don't know any other way. I am excited to see what and how my life will change. Don't get me wrong, I have made lots of little changes that NUT recommended.

4 weeks out... How are you feeling? Any surprises? I have fear of the unknown. :)

me too. We will get through this journey successfully you just wait and see.

I'm on day 3. It's not as bad as I thought. I am gaining confidence too in my ability to do what is required after surgery to avoid muscle loss. Just stay focused. Mindfulness - just taking in the minute in front of you. One day, one second at a time.

I am starting my 14 day liquid diet on Thanksgiving...OMG that is four days away!!! I'm excited but afraid at the same time. I just hope I can eat sugar free popsicles during this time.

My family and I had our Thanksgiving dinner today. I start my 3 week pre-op diet tomorrow. I had a Protein shake for Breakfast today, but did eat a few more carbs than I hoped I would today with dinner. No pie, so I think I did far better today than in years past. I told my hubby I'd cook a ham for him Thursday. I'm sure I can be strong through the week, and once I have a few days of success I won't want to give that up. At least that's my plan, and I'm sticking to it!

My pre-op was laid out for me 3 months ago, right after my lap band was removed. I've had a fear of gaining up above the planned pre-op diet start weight (what I weighed when the band came out). I won't say "luckily" as I had to be mindful, but I've made it to the starting line within a pound of where I was 3 months ago. Now to lose the planned amount before surgery.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
