Alternatives to Candy for Halloween

Recommended Posts

I know for many of us, Halloween is a challenge because of the abundance of candy available at home and in the office.

With the increase in food allergies as well as obesity among kids, it is time to start thinking about offering alternatives to candy for trick or treaters.

Here is an interesting article about the Teal pumpkin project.

Is anyone planning to hand out something other than candy this year?

Your link is broken :( or I just don't see it.

I like giving out small toys - since I have nieces and nephews that actually like the toys better than the candy sometimes. Less fights that way too. lol

I am still giving out regular candy. I feel confident that I will be able to resist eating it and the neighborhood kids wouldn't be happy with me if I gave out raisins :-) Having candy and treats around is just a part of life. Thanks to my sleeve I don't feel the desire or urge to induldge!

I'm going to give out regular candy. Personally I have no problem resisting the candy myself, and I think the kids should have one day a year where they get candy. The rest of the year they can eat healthy

Problem is, after halloween, they have so much candy that they end up having candy for a week or more, not just on one day.

With my daughter, last year I ended up going through the candy and throwing away half of it, and only letting her have one or two pieces a day. After a week, she got bored of it and we move on to more healthy Snacks.

And I have always hated having lots of candy in the house. For those of you who it doesn't affect, bless you. But it calls to me something fierce, especially chocolate. Up until last year I used to buy a huge bag or two of candy from costco three weeks before Halloween, and then eat it all before Halloween and have to buy more for the actual holiday. Thank God I stopped that last year.

I like the idea of giving out small toys or stickers. One of the problems with candy is that we end up getting older teenagers who come by (sometimes multiple times) to get candy. If I hand out small toys, those older kids will be less interested, while the young kids will be happy to have a toy they can play with.

My $0.02.

I give out candy and the candy I give out is the good stuff! I am not a sweets eater, so a piece or so a day is more than plenty. I prefer to waste my candy calories on something I love rather than something I don't, so I get what I like. :)

My boyfriend and I both can not resist candy and have both worked hard to loose over 100 lbs each. So this year I got Halloween pretzel packs. I also do not think kids need huge bags of candy for weeks and weeks. I don't care if they are happy or not, we can't have it in our home.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
