I need advice! on food / stages and carbs

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm not your topical sleever. Theoretically I am 3 weeks post op but I haven't been eating or drinking during that time (due to complications) Now I'm home and on pure liquid. My stomach is 3 weeks ahead (healing wise) of my eating stage. I'm dizzy and weak just on the broth but I don't want to be stupid and eat things I shouldn't. I mean, I still have to learn to use my new tool. I don't have a NUT so not sure how to navigate here. Btw. I'm afraid to introduce carbs back in (as I use to be a total Carboholic)

Protein. Water and creamed Soups might be a good place to start. Next is mushy foods like eggs, tuna, fish and ricotta cheese. After that is soft foods. Go slow till you figure out what your sleeve can handle. Always protein first.

What instructions were you given when discharged in terms of how to eat? Can you clarify what you consider a carb because carbs are in nearly everything. You should not be afraid of complex carbs because they are a good thing. They will give you energy and are often found in foods that also provide Fiber and other key Vitamins & nutrients.

Are you supposed to be drinking Protein drinks? I just purchased Syntrax Nectar (fuzzy navel) suggested by others. You might want to look at those. You definately need to get your protein in. 3 weeks in the hospital must have been awful! So sorry you were not well. Hopefully you are now on your way to a fast recovery:D

I'm getting a better grip on it. Getting my protein in. Had to buy non-flavored one because the flavored I purchased a head of time are WAY to sweet / intense for me. Baby steps! I'm still fighting pneumonia :-(

I haven't been given any specific instruction, just the topical: stay hydrated, get your protein.. CARBS on the other hand.. I see among sleevers that some are not concerned about them much and some are on a strict: high Protein / no carb track. I know, I will figure it all out eventually. :-)

Thanks so much. In getting my water & my Protein Shakes. By now I've tried Greek yogurt, egg whites, mushy carrots and some broccoli, tiny bit of cooked chicken. First 2 were great. Vegetables out of the Soup and the chicken made my stomach miserable so I'm back to protein shakes & creamed soup tomorrow. Baby steps!

Well I don't do low carb at all. I eat a mostly plant based diet so there will be carbs. I avoid processed carbs and refined carbs like breads and pastas. My program doesn't focus on carbs at all. The concern is to keep calories low and Protein high. I aim for 100 grams of Protein each day and I work out 4 -6 days a week. I use carbs and protein to fuel my workouts. This has worked for me and to the best of my knowledge I have never experienced a stall.

I think you may do best googling and downloading a handbook. Otherwise you'll get a thousand different and conflicting instructions. Google also complex carbs vs simple carbs.

Thanks, that sounds very sound. It's going to be a while till I can hit the gym though. I did find a handbook on google last night. Will study it today. I think, for me, I have to change the way of thinking. It's the carbs that made me fat so they're the bad guys but I'm not on yet another crash diet, my whole life has changed after sleeve. This is a new way of eating, living, functioning. It requires a new mind set ;-)

You could try your vegetables in pureed form, like in this "Winter Potage" Soup. You are basically first boiling some super-healthy vegetables (edamame, peas, spinach and broccoli) in low sodium/fat free chicken broth, and then you puree everything in a blender until smooth. It is delicious and full of Vitamins from all the veggies, even has some Protein from the edamame. You might go light on the pepper if your tummy is not settled yet.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
