1 week post-op. How many "meals"?

Recommended Posts

I actually 8 days post-op now and have started advancing my diet per surgeon's instructions. (Day 6 was when I was given green light to move on to soft dairy(yogurt, cottage cheese and apple sauce for 2 -5 days) So I am doing 2 Protein Shakes for 50+grams protein(depending on which type I grab), as many zero cal liquids as I can and I added a lunch of the soft dairy which has been 2-3 bites about 1 TBSP.

My instruction sheet is pretty detailed but doesn't mention how often I should add solids to my diet.

Should I have another "meal" of soft dairy at this point?

I am not hungry ever and need to push to get the shakes in and now a few bites of cottage cheese or yogurt.

What is everyone else doing?

The most important elements of the program are meeting your Protein, Vitamin and Fluid requirements. In the beginning food is relatively unimportant. This is because your body is converting stored fats into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.

So in terms of meals, my surgeon recommended 3 meals per day. But the volume of food in the beginning is incredibly small, only a 1/4 cup per meal. Making the transition to solid foods can be rough. I basically relied on softer foods such as home made high Protein Soups and chili. They went down easy and had lots of flavor.

I have included some recipes in a short article I wrote about my experience. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf

I would focus on Protein, as the previous poster mentioned. It all depends on how much you can eat at one time. If you can only get a half yogurt down, you may be eating 6-7 times per day, whatever it takes to get your Protein in. It will all "come together" for you, hang in there.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
