Does it ever get better?

Recommended Posts

I am on day 2 post op and I feel absolutely miserable. I can't keep any main medicine down. I can only tolerate Water, broth, and half a Popsicle. I am in so much pain and discomfort and just want to feel better. How long did it take for you to start feeling better? I know it's different for everyone but I'm just curious.

It definitely gets better. This is not what it is like, this is because you just had surgery. Hang in there! Focus on hydration then Protein. It got better every day as I healed but I probably felt pretty good and able to get fluids in pretty well at one week.

Get rest and recuperate. They are not kidding when they say sip, sip, sip!

It gets so much better, what you're going through now will someday feel like a distant dream. Feel better!

I know it's hard to believe at this moment, but it does get much,. much better. Just hang in there and don't forget your water! At day 2, I sat in the hospital and wondered why on earth I had done this to myself. The process can be slow and uncertain, but every day something new happens and gives you strength. For me the defining moment came about three weeks after surgery when without thinking I bent over and picked something up with no pain in the knees or back and no shortness of breath. Then I sat down and crossed my legs (something I hadn't done in quite a while). Seemingly small victories, but they were huge for me. Your many victories are coming!

Today is day 4 for me. Days 1 and 2 were horrible I couldn't have anything by mouth I was throwing everything up...BUT day 3 was a complete turn around and today, day 4, I feel really good. I'm ready to go home!

Be patient it does get a lot better and it changes quickly. Try to focus on your Water and Protein intake, that is the most important thing you can do right now. Later take time to enjoy the little victories.

I agree with all above. Days 2 & 3 were worst. It does get better. By day 5 I was back to work. Very tired, but the walking, etc actually helped with the gas pains and moving helped me feel better. They gave me several meds for nausea and I took them for a good week. I never once threw up, they wanted to prevent that at all costs. Meclizine and Dramamine are 2 meds over the counter you can get and take. They make you sleepy but really help that nausea. Hang in there...it does improve, I promise!! I will say, drink drink drink. I thought I was drinking enough but was still so dehydrated I'd have muscle cramps in my legs when I'd walk. That and very small urine output are your 2 biggest symptoms of dehydration. Don't worry about Protein right now as much as getting that liquid in you!

Just was wondering, I am day 4 post op and I've been really good all except for pain in the right side of my abdomen and under the edge of the right side of my rib cage, did anyone else experience this?

A lot of that pain is trapped air/gas. Once you are up and moving around more, that goes away and improves. They fill your abdomen with CO2 during surgery and it gets trapped in there.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
