1 week post op and a bit confused

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone I just had gastric bypass one week ago I'm confused as to how I'm able to drink so many liquids without feeling full. I read about people all the time eating and drinking so little and feeling full. I have yet felt that feeling. I don't want to over eat but nothing is physically telling me I'm full or to stop.

Is there something I should be doing? or something I'm doing wrong? any help counts !

I was 5 weeks post op on Monday, and my experience was similar to yours. Turns out, the nerves in your stomach aren't healed yet, so you aren't going to really be feeling a whole lot when you drink, especially if you have no other complications. I have not, even a single time, experienced the pain most people talk about experiencing if they overeat. I do, however, feel full now. It feels similar to having to burp, or what that felt like before surgery.

Your stomach and nerves will catch up. In the mean time, just take care of yourself and follow your surgeon's plan very carefully. Even if it feels like you can drink or eat more, stick to your measured amount and you'll be just fine in the end. :)

Thanks ☺️ I'm not to sure how much I should be drinking at a time . I don't want to over do it and ruin my pouch . Do you by any chance have a guideline?

I was told to take a marble sized sip every couple of minutes. liquid does not stay in our pouch nearly as long as pureed food or solid food does. Just take a small sip, really try to feel what your stomach is telling you, then take another, and just go slowly from there. I have a 14 oz Water bottle, and it usually takes me an hour or so to drink it, with some breaks as I do other stuff.

you shouldn't feel full from Water, but most definitely when you have your Protein Shake. I would suggest slowing down. It takes me about 1 hour to have my 12 ounce shake and sometimes I can't finish it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
