Heartburn and bypass

Recommended Posts

I am 28 months post-op RNY surgery. I experience severe heartburn before surgery but none afterwards. I was prescribed Omeprazole (Prilosec) for the first year after surgery to help my stomach to heal. Prilosec was what I normally used when I had heartburn before surgery. So It wasn't until one year after surgery that I knew that my severe heartburn (GERD) was in remission.

Sometimes dumping syndrome mirrors some of the same symptoms as severe acid reflux. So maybe you are experiencing an adverse reaction to fats (in milk products) or sugars due to the RNY surgery (part of your stomach that normally process these has been cut away).

I also had a revision from sleeve to bypass on sept 4th. I was prescribed omeprazole to take twice a day for two months as my stomach heals. I hear that we really shouldn't have any reflux after our stomach heals.

I had severe reflux prior to bypass. I was on the gold standard medication for it at the maximum dose of twice per day.

I have not had a single episode of heartburn or reflux since my surgery.

They had me use nexium for 4 weeks post surgery and then stop.

I am just about to hit my 12 month surgiversary.

I venture to guess that you are actually having either dumping syndrome or potentially a lactose intolerance which is common and feels a lot like heartburn.

I also had severe gerd with sleeve that is why I was revised to RNY. I do believe now it was dumping. It happened again today after drinking crystal light lemonade which is what I had when it happened during my post. I will no longer be drinking anything with any artificial sweeteners and sticking to just Water and propel. I will be calling my surgeon tomorrow to question why I was not told to stay on my dexilant while I heal. Hmmmm thank you all!!! Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
