Emergency EGD for stricture

Recommended Posts

After a few rough days of trying to keep down food and take my Vitamins, I finally found out that I had a stricture. Spent all day at the clinic and ER and they sedated me and used a balloon to dilate the area that was narrowed. Don't know any other details than that but when I follow up with my surgeon tomorrow he will fill me in more. I can't tell you all the relief I feel now that he has gone in and stretched out the stricture. I am worried that I will continue to get one though. As if it's going to narrow again or something. Has anyone else had it fixed and did it come back?

Glad they figured it out for you! I got really sick last week and went to the ER after 2 days of not keeping down food and Water and all they did was a CT scan, found nothing and sent me home. Kept vomiting the next day so my surgeon arranged EGD on the 4th day and found that I too had a stricture. Mine was very very small so they dilated it some but sent me to GI dr who I am told will have to do several dilations as they can only stretch it so far at a time. I was told to stick with liquids for a while. Just FYI in case they didn't tell you in the hospital. I have my 2nd dilation scheduled for 9 a.m. tomorrow 6 days after first). Hope to have some more info and will let you know if I find out anything of importance.

yes they can come back - I've had two. But they tend to be an early complication - after the first 3 or 4 months, you'll probably be in the clear.

So after a long day spent in the clinic and ER, I did end up having a tiny stricture. They put me to sleep, dilated it with a balloon, and voila! I can't tell you how much better I feel. I had my first small chef salad and one buffalo wing drumette for dinner and I thoroughly enjoy my first "real" meal. He said he wanted me to go ahead and eat a regular diet now, so I did. I chewed real good and real slow and had no problems at all. I feel a little tight in the morning, is that normal? i just dring some hot tea and that seems to help loosen things up a bit.

Wow! I'm jealous. I was on Clear Liquids for 24 hours then full liquids for a few days and then I can go to pureeds and eventually solid foods again. (My second dilation was yesterday morning.). Hope you continue to feel better and better!

I had RNY surgery on 07/27/15 and EGD procedure in 9/3 for a stricture. Doc put me back to clear liquids and I start Phase 2 tomorrow:( it is making me sad. I just want to be able to return to some type of normal, like eating food, even if it's just a few bites!

@@dlw3412 - So sorry! I feel your pain! How long are you to be on Phase 2? They weren't very specific with me, so I started pureeds today (EGD was also 9/3). It just says "as tolerated". Not sure when I can move on to the next step. Guess I will just wing it! Good luck! Take it slow. Bites will come soon enough for us both!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
