Running or walking after Gastric Sleeve

Recommended Posts

I just started running yesterday but have always walked since my surgery last December. Just wondering if people have had better weight loss post sleeve running as opposed to walking for exercise.

If you go the same distance you should be able to burn the same calories. But one can go a farther distance and burn more calories in a shorter amount of time running. As you lose weight you may need to actually run in order to acheive the same heart rate. You should be able to check and see what your heart rate is on a treadmill or elliptical at 4mph that is considered running speed. How fast are you currently walking 3.5mph or more and 4mph is the next step. That all being said running is rougher on the joints. But the endorphins are awesome:-) Good luck!

I personally found that I was losing more consistently when I started running as opposed to strength training and walking. At least that was my experience. At one point I was running 3 miles every other day, but have had to back off a little recently due to an injury. Hoping to get back up to 3 miles again soon!

I started running post surgery and love it! I've lost more than I ever thought I could and am keeping it off. I do believe the running has a lot to do with it.

I also do yoga which has built up my muscle mass (which means more calories burned and a higher metabolism)

I've lost 136lbs--271 to 135--wear a size 2/4 and have 18% body fat. I think I would have lost even without the running, but not that much and my body fat % would have been higher.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
