Feeling hopeless...

Recommended Posts

I had a date all set, did ALL testing and psych appointments, 8 months of supervised weight loss, met with anesthesiologist, signed consent paperwork, a week away from VSG, surgeons office calls and says that endocrinologist wants to postpone because my A1C was high. Surgeon said he understands that A1C was high, I'm a type-1 diabetic and that's the reasoning behind the surgery. I've NEVER had a A1C within "normal" range, ever. I'm beyond frustrated and feeling hopeless that this is never going to happen. Been throwing up blood since finding out...this is NOT helping fix any blood sugar issues whatsoever.

So Frustrating!! I hope things straighten out soon for you. Did they say how long they want to postpone?

No, I haven't heard from my endocrinologist yet, despite leaving messages(he was on vacation and just got back today). He sure did have time to call my surgeon though. Sorry, just upset. My A1C(blood sugars) have always been off, and under their complete control(being hospitalized and whatnot),THEY could not even stabilize. I'm a brittle diabetic and surgery was a tool that would've helped HUGE!

How frustrating! I understand the rationale behind why they would want to postpone your surgery, but why would they wait a week before to tell you that your A1c was too high to do it?

:( hopefully it's just a temporary postponement

I would blast the $#!t out of that doctor and ask him 1) why he didn't tell you that this would be an issue up front (since you've always had the A1C issue) and then 2) why he didn't tell you yourself in addition to the surgeon. Who's paying him anyway? Then I would go find another endocrinologist and have an open mind and ask him what the issue could be (maybe there is one, maybe there isn't). If its not an issue I would implore your surgeon to reschedule ASAP. I would also ask him why he did not consult with said endocrinologist earlier in the process if this was really a dealbreaker?

Also, sounds like if he doesn't return your call an in person visit ASAP is definitely in order. In fact, I would tell them that you expect to be their first appointment tomorrow morning if their office is still open. If not tell them that you want the first appointment the next day.

I would think the surgeon would trump what the endo has to say. He is the one performing the procedure and if he feels comfortable doing it, he would do it. The surgeon usually consults other specialists to make sure everything else is okay with you to protect himself. If he knew your A1C was an issue prior and was prepared to go ahead, then something sounds fishy! I would definitely ask for a second opinion. Hope it all works out and moves quickly. Best of luck to you!

Thank you! I'm am just beyond frustrated. I was/am ready to go. I have done EVERYTHING they have asked. My nurse at the surgeons office said they are most likely worried about healing(incisions closing up properly) with sugars being so crazy. Also worried about lows and being able to treat them...

Really sorry this happened but I gotta ask - throwing up blood?! That sounds very scary. Is this something you have done before?

No, I have NEVER had that happen before. I got a phone call Friday that they MAY have to postpone. Naturally, I was extremely upset, being a week out. I cried, ALOT, this weekend, to the point of becoming physically sick. I thought I was finally going to take a wonderful step in the direction of becoming truly healthy. I got the call today that it WAS, in fact, being postponed. I was so upset but haven't eaten much so started dry heaving. After a bit, I finally threw up the Water I had drank and it had blood. I am going to call my surgeon tomorrow and let him know what's going on.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
