Questions, questions ....

Hello there

I have just been dipping my toe into looking at WLS as an option and have so many questions and am hoping this is place to pose them?!

I have been reading up on this site and couple of others, looking at blogs on you tube etc, for the last few weeks and guess it is time to plunge in and I apologise in advance for the length of the post!

Ok, so a little background about me, I have always been big (although not really fat until puberty hit at 10 - turns out I have PCOS but this wasn't diagnosed until a couple of years ago).

I have tried (and failed) with diets since my early teens - Portion Control is my main problem and if I am honest I am an all or nothing type of girl and do use food as a comfort. Anyone else like this - how do you cope after surgery? What do you do to fill that gap?

Once I fall off the wagon that's it! My best weight loss was when I ate less than 1000 cals per day and did loads of exercise. I lost 75 pounds and kept it off for about a year, but bad habits snuck back in, as did the excuses ....

Anyway I have been really lucky and had no health issues even though I am morbidly obese BUT I became properly poorly at the beginning of this year (not actually related to being obese at all) and was in intensive care for a couple of weeks and it has left me with a few health issues not least diabetes (they can't decide if type 1 or 2) but my consultant for this is fairly convinced WLS will help either way.

She said a bypass (although after reading up I am maybe leaning towards sleeve, obviously need to talk to a specialist about this).

She gave me the name of Prof Francesco Rubino at Kings College hospital, London - anybody had him, I am trying to arrange a consult at the moment??

Rather than wait ages on NHS (at least year according to my GP) my hubby and I have decided to go privately (although it does scare me to use our savings on this) I am located in Kent, S E England and have also arranged a couple of initial consultations for the beginning of September, with clinics locally. Anyone based in the South East?

I have a list of questions but I guess I am asking, what do you consider to have been the most important questions to ask. from your experiences?

What would you have asked or considered to the most important thing when considering a surgeon/clinic?

If you paid privately, what did you pay for surgery, what did include in terms of aftercare? Were you, are you happy with the care you received?

Do you have any regrets about surgery? Who did you tell? Did you have any complications (this is a major worry for my husband)?

We have a young son and after scaring everyone silly in January, I just want to be healthly and around for him as long as possible.

We also would really like to try for a sibling for him .

Any other advice? All gratefully received! ;)

So sorry for never ending questions ...

Thanks

Freckle

Hi Chrisredjeep

Thanks so much for the reply and congratulations on the weight you have lost so far, you are doing amazingly!

I was thinking it would be about 10k so at least I am in right ball park!

How long did you wait between your initial consultation and actually having the op?

Did you speak to a counsellor or anyone before going ahead?

Thanks

The most important question I asked my surgeon was "How do you handle pain management?" My concern was that I read where so many people in this forum suffered accumulated CO2 gas in their shoulders post-op. The doc uses CO2 to inflate the abdominal cavity to make it easier to manipulate his instruments and see what he is doing. Apparently, many surgeons just close you up when they are done and tell you to walk it off.

My doctor said he would extract as much as possible before closing. Consequently, I had no shoulder gas at all.

Good luck with your surgery and recovery. It will be money well spent.

I had my meeting with the surgeon 28 May and had op 16 July. Could have been sooner but I needed to be around for birth of daughters first baby. I did a good bit of reading about the peeve and as I have been fat fighting all my life I just felt that this was the best resort for me. I looked into lap band about 5 years ago but did not go forward . My surgeon Mr hassan won't even do lap band any more. The dietician has been ok with advice but we don't have to jump through as many hoops as over the pond folks do !

Thanks for the info Miss Mac I will definitely be asking that question!

I have been researching the 3 surgeons who do ops locally to me and have come across a worrying news article from a couple of years ago. It involves all 3 who worked at a local NHS hospital and casts doubt on their care and integrity, although not for bariatric surgery.

It has put me off rather, although I had already booked an appointment with one of them at a local private hospital. I will go to the appointment next week and reserve judgement I think. Mr Google has sent me a little bit doolally and into worry mode just lately - my fault entirely, but it does seem as going private and paying yourself as opposed to going down the NHS/insurance route is a bit of a minefield at times...

Any thoughts? Has anyone had doubts about a surgeon and then met them and then felt better??

Thanks

Freckle

Hello @

What would you have asked or considered to the most important thing when considering a surgeon/clinic?

Honestly? Gut feeling, previous records of surgery complications and if they listened to me!

I paid £10,000 and I am very happy with the team I had. They are registered as an international centre of excellence for bariatric surgery by the Surgical Review Corporation, which assesses the safety and quality of bariatric centres across the world. I chose to do most of my ‘meetings’ by telephone as I had done a lot of research into having the sleeve before even picking the phone up and I couldn’t keep taking a day off work just to go for a chat. I appreciate it’s just more than a chat but I felt it was all done well by phone anyway. I called a few places before the one I chose and just liked the first lady I spoke to, Ali and the fact she had had the band and then the bypass, so she could speak from experience.

Do you have any regrets about surgery? Who did you tell? Did you have any complications (this is a major worry for my husband)?

I am 6 weeks out in 3 days and don’t have any regrets about the surgery. I had a bit of a wobble on day 3 when I was sat in my hospital room and for a split second thought, “OMG this is FOREVER”. Like I say, only a split second and then all was well lol. Initially I told a few friends, my boss and of course the hubster but as the date got nearer I told more work colleagues.

I haven’t had any complications at all. None, Zip. Nada. Nothing. I think I had an amazing surgeon and couldn’t praise him enough. Plus I have worked hard myself and kept to the plan! I was constipated for a while but that’s just part of the package not a complication.

I can understand why you want to do this. My Dad died when he was 50 and I am 54. My second son is getting married soon and they want to start a family straight away. My Dad never got to see his grandsons and it hit home that I want to be around for a long time to get to know my grandkids!

It’s natural to have fear and anxiety around this decision. It’s a major change for the rest of your life but I seriously feel that if you do it for the right reasons, it’s the best thing you can do for not only yourself but your family.

Really nice to meet you :D

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
