Terrified: Eating too much 3 1/2 week out?

Recommended Posts

MarceMonster, my carb limit is between 30-40. That would be hard for me now. I'm only supposed to be eating Protein, no veggies or fruit. Do a milk/ instant Breakfast Protein Drink that is about 14 carbs.

So your Dr. Wants you to be max 40g of carbs per day? Yea, see I can eat fruit and veggies. I try to limit my carbs to 40g per day, because I know my body likes to hold onto carbs. Honestly though this goes against what the NUT at my surgeons office suggests, which is a MINIMUM of 60g per day. That just seems way too high. So I decided to try an experiment and "split the baby" by only counting Net Carbs instead of total carbs like I was counting. So this means that I am getting overall more carbs but I am limiting my Net Carbs to 40 or less per day. Hopefully, this works, if not I will go back to counting my total carbs.
Good luck. I go to office on Tuesday and hope to be able to eat veggies. But I'm not sure if I will be able to. Still can only eat about 2oz and have to have Protein first.

I am 9 months post op and still only eat 4-5 bites of food at a time. I'm still on 600 calories a day. I don't eat fruit or carbohydrates of any kind (except the occasional Beans in chili, or something like that). I'm frankly amazed that you are able to eat those particular foods, in those volumes, that often, at only 3.5 weeks out. I was still on purees at that point. I would definitely give your NUT a call.

Wow, only 600 calories a day at 9 months post op? Are you getting in all your Protein every day? That seems really low. What does your NUT say?

I get 60 g of Protein every day, and yep, my NUT and my doctor both have me on 600-700 calories daily. I'm down 120 lbs and still dropping, so it seems to be going ok! Everyone is different, though :)

At thirteen months out I'm eating 1,100 calories. At 3 weeks out I was just starting soft foods and eating around 700 calories.

Around the 6 week mark, my doc had me increase my calories to 1000/day. I'm at 10 weeks now, and am still keeping to that.

At 3 weeks out I was getting close to 800 calories.

Months 1 - 4 I aimed for 800.

Months 5-6 I aimed for 1,000.

Months 7-8 I aimed for 1,200.

(All this was on the advice of my bariatric PA who said if I ate too little for too long I'd teach my body how to survive on a starvation budget.)

Apparently, it worked. I reached goal in 8.5 months. In the last 4 months I've lost almost 10 more pounds and am maintaining that weight (141-143 lbs.) at 1600-1700 calories.

Obviously, everyone's advice, experience and results on this subject varies.

How much weight did you have to lose? That's so awesome that you reached goal 8.5 months out. I am trying my best to reach goal within a year. I just had my two month check up last week and the Dr. said I was above average in my weight loss. I lost 33% of my excess weight, he said he usually doesn't see that until about month 4. I was so excited. I hope I do as well as you, congratulations!

Marce, FYI, I'm 5'5".

I started exactly where you did: 235 pounds. I lost 19 pounds pre-op. Surgery day I weighed 216. I lost 66 pounds to goal (150 pounds). Then lost another 9 pounds -- was 140.8 morning before last -- during the last 4 months.

Oh -- and I'm nearly 70 years old.

I didn't lose fast, but the pace I lost at was just fine with me. :)

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
