Passing For Thin - Support Thread for Those Approaching Goal

I'm not sure what you can do to get yourself motivated. I'm faking motivation right now, just forcing myself to stick to my diet and exercise. I'm hoping I'll lose a few pounds and that will motivate me to continue, if it doesn't, I don't now what I'll do.

I had pretty much given up for a little while, a month or so of eating and drinking what ever I wanted when ever I wanted. I know I don't need another fill, at least I'm pretty sure I don't because I'm pretty tight sometimes. But, I keep the thought in the back of my mind.

I'm not really on any type of exercise program. I am signed up for one class at my club, it is called Personal Training Boot Camp. Every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 530 about 6 of us meet with a personal trainer and she takes us through circuit training for an hour. At the end and beginning of each month you can get your body measurements and fat % checked. I had it done at the beginning of the first month, and then I'll do it at the end of each month.

She taught us how to use the weight room and which exercises we should do and much weight for each one. So, after that class, I go lift weights.

On Mondays and Wednesdays at the same time, there is a step aerobics class for an hour that I go to. After that I lift weights as well.

AFter weights, I go down to the pool and swim laps. I have been swimming since October, and stopped for a little while when I started the classes. However, I figured out that the classes alone where not burning enough calories to lose the weight, so I added the swimming back in, at least for the summer.

When school starts back up, I won't be able to exercise as long in the mornings, so I'll have to figure out something else to do. I'm hoping that I will be pretty close to goal then (fingers crossed) and it won't be as hard on me to lose slowly. Either that, or I will have to find the energy to go for long walks after school. Anyway, I'm trying not to think that far ahead and just worry about the next 6 weeks.

If I do well, I could lose 12 lbs before school starts, then I'll be really close to goal.

That is awesome Jane!!! I do have a membership to the gym and don't use it. I have been going back and forth on if I should cancel it or keep it. It has just been hard with the kids home for the summer. I don't have any excuses. I even have an elyptical upstairs and some hand weights. I have videos, strenth training bands, the big ball you can do sit ups with, etc. I have any Ipod with all my favorite music and still, NADA!!!!

I think too, if I can lose some more weight, I may be motivated to start toning.

That is why I came back here too, to be accountable.

....I had to choke down the first 6 bites, feeling it coming up, but not pbing. The last few bites were better. But I knew I needed the nutrients.

Has this happened to anyone?

I have not ever really had restriction, not since right after surgury, so this is all new to me.

It sounds like you have "first bite" syndrome to me -- could that be it? I had it pretty bad when I first got restriction too. The only cure is to take even tinier bites (it seems unreal, I know) and to WAIT a really long time between bites for the first 3 or 4 bites (like 2 full minutes between bites), then you can probably pick up the pace. Mine lasted for about 3 months, then slowly got "better." I put the "better" in quotes because though it's nice to be able to eat more comfortably, it's also nice to know, with every bite, that your band is there.

If you think this could be it, you might want to do a search on the main forum, as (as you probably know) there's quite a bit of discussion about it.

Well yall, I got in a 6 mile run tonight after the slowest day at work ever. It's a good thing I have this office flirtation to keep me busy because my job is BORING right now....

I will try to do what you say. I tried to eat again, of what I thou9ght would go through fine, chips and got so stuck that I almost Pb'd and felt pain in my chest like a heart attack!!!!

It hurt SOOOOOOOOOOOOO bad!!!!

Like, you say, it is nice to finally know my Bandy is there!!!

Does your PMS time affect it too?

Do you ever have the 2 weeks to feel the restriction thing?

The reason that it takes awhile to go away is as you lose the fat around the stomach, the band loosens up.

Do you guys ever get afraid of being tight? I have had such slow weight loss, at the same time I am afraid to get tighter because of all the trouble and problems Audree is talking about. I am just now getting back to where I can eat again. I want to lose, but it scares me when you read about all the problems you can get from being too tight.

One thing I am really afraid of is losing my band. I would hate to lose all the weight, and have something go wrong.

It's so nice when you see people that you haven't seen for a long time, and they tell you how great you look. I have gone through this so many times, with losing it and gaining it back. I want this to be for keeps and that's what makes me afraid to get too tight, having reflux, pbing, etc. All of that is what is supposed to cause erosion or slips. I hope I am making sense.

I know for right now, I can't get another fill until after I visit my dad, out of state. He doesn't know I am banded and I already made the mistake one time of going to visit him right after a fill and having him wonder why I can't eat. I don't want to listen to him lecture me on how I could have done this on my own without paying ten grand.

I'm with Denise that, at least in part, weight loss includes loss of fat around your organs so you loosen up a little as you lose. My personal belief is that, perhaps more of a factor, is that your body simply gets used to the band -- learns that it is "normal" to process food that way. You read a lot about bandsters who are 18-24 months out losing their "soft stops." Many are already at goal (or at their long term plateau), so it's not an issue of weight loss for them, it's an issue of their bodies not responding in exactly the same manner as they did in the earlier bandster stage. So, for first bite syndrome, what freaks out your esophogus now, might not freak it out after a couple of months of training!

Audree, I can eat almost anything in terms of textures. I don't have the problems with breads and pastas, eggs, etc. that so many report -- yet the ONE thing that I cannot tolerate in any kind of quantity is chips. They just gum up and cause the pain you described. I can eat maybe 5, but any more than that and I'm in real trouble. Maybe you're the same way....

In partial response to you and in partial response to Denise, yes, I experience pretty radical fluctuations in restriction based on my time of the month. 2 weeks out of the month (5 days around ovulation, 7 days around period), I'm a little too tight. The rest of the time, I'm a little too loose. I'm more too loose than I am too tight, and I choose to be that way because I believe being too tight is dangerous to our bands long term and again, I'm with Denise, that the worst thing that could happen would be to lose my band. I find there's not much I can do to help these fluctuations in restriction. It's just part of being a woman, I guess. I'm ok with it. I lose weight during the 2 weeks I'm a bit tight, and I might have a binge or two on the 2 weeks I'm loose (though I try not to), but I don't want a fill.

Lastly, I got in 4 miles this morning and am meeting with my trainer for strenth training tonight. My scale oscilated between 164.8 and 165.0 this morning, but settled on 165.0. When I changed my ticker this morning, I realized that I now only have TWENTY-SOMETHING pounds to lose until goal. Isn't that crazy?? Totally "normal" women want to lose twenty-something pounds all the time. Guess I'm more Passing For Thin to the outside world than I realize....

I actually don't see how I am right now as a problem. I am very content with my restriction. If I don't have some type of "stop" built in, I can't stop eating. I would rather be this way and get what I paid for. I haven't pb'd since this fill. Getting stuck isn't too fun, but it passes and usually takes my appetite away.

I would love to stay exactly this way until all my weight is gone and then at the end be just a tad looser, but not much.

I am enjoying not being hungry and not being able to eat a lot, just like after surgery. It gives me an awesome feeling of control over my battle with food and hunger.

I hated being a slave to being sooooo hungry and dieting!!!:faint:

That was an awesome explanation!!!!

I am also like you, that I can eat anything. There has been no food that I could not eat, but I guess I am in a totally different ball game now. But chips were the thing I could eat too well.:faint:

I think I am a little more restricted since it is a day or so before my period. I always tend to retain Water around this time, like 3-4 pounds.

I am actually enjoying where I am, I am not pushing things so I am not stretching the pouch.

I think another part of my problem is that I have NEVER taken small bites and chewed well. Since I never really have had restriction, I take MONSTER bites and don't chew well. Normally, pre band I don't like to really chew and swallow my food with chunks in it. I never put my fork down and just keep on shoveling the food in.

So, now I am learning that I have to take smaller bites and wait some between.

But thank God I don't PB. I think I get stuck and then have the pain because I take another bite and keep on swallowing what is in my mouth after I feel stuck.

I think that's another issue we face at goal -- not that we don't think about it before, but at goal we have fewer weight issues, so the ones left are magnified. I don't worry so much about a slip because that is generally fixable with a surgery, and I accepted long ago that there was a possibility of follow up surgery if I opted for the band. Erosion, though, is super scary to me because it jeopardizes my ability to be banded period. THAT is scary. (I know there are stories of super bad slips where the person couldn't be rebanded, but I think that's kind of like worrying about lightening striking me -- extremely unlikely and nothing I can do about it anyway.)

Denise, I think you're right to worry and to protect your band by keeping it on the loose side. It's a smart move.

I'm OVERWEIGHT! WOOHOO!! So exciting.

I was afraid of the same thing!

They had me do the "toast test" right after the fill to see if I was too tight so they could unfill if needed. They have me drink Water then eat a 2 pieces of toast. Then they check me under fleuro again to see how it is going. The are so through at OCC.

Then he likes you to hang around town for the day if you can so if you are too tight, you can come back and get a slight unfill.

It is best to sneak up on a fill then get overfilled.

That sounds like a great way to do it Audree! My dr. only gives us a glass of Water to drink. When he had me too tight, the water came back up. Then he took a little bit out. All I know is, I seem to lose the most right after a fill when I can barely eat. Then I get stuck on these maddening plateaus.:think

      Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

      2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

        I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

        I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
