Suddenly insecure

Recommended Posts

I think when they talk about the sleeve losing effectiveness is that the hormone ghelin eventually returns, therefore your hunger returns. Obviously you still have the sleeve so you still have restriction.

Hmmm interesting. I just told the Nurse I wanted to start the ball rolling on a revision from band to sleeve. Waiting for someone to call me back on that. But I may change my mind for about 300th time. I'm so afraid of doing this and it not working for me.

I've been having band issues, but no slip or anything like that - just reflux, chest pain, nausea...which are all also symptoms of gallbladder disease apparently as well. I just wonder if I should get the gallbladder taken care of and see where that leaves me with the band. Oh geez! This is really hard. Truly. Because on days I don't feel so bad and am not having any band issues (like not being able to eat without it hurting) I think I'll just wait...yesterday I felt like crap so I was ready to get rid of it.

I wish I had a crystal ball.

For sure get your gall bladder checked before anything else. Your doctor will tell you that too, and today it's a pretty easy surgery. Give it some time then before doing your sleeve if you're going to do it. And know whatever decision you make, it's the right one for you!

Sorry to hear about your illness & the meds making you gain weight. Glad u r better now. I went thru the same thing. In 1 year I gained 60 pounds. Craved sugar & would get up at nite & eat anything sweet & not be aware or remember. Since then they have banned that particular sleeping pill (halcyon) & changed my antidepressants. Good luck!! I wish u the best.

This is a good explanation of the "stretching" idea and the eventual return of hunger hormones:

http://obesitycoverage.com/weight-loss-surgeries/gastric-sleeve/gastric-sleeve-will-my-stomach-stretch

This isn't magic...it's a damn good tool, which gives 80% of those who take advantage of it a chance for a permanent change. But it's not a guaranty you will do the work.

My doctor, with Northwestern Medicine in Cgo, says the sleeve does NOT lose effectiveness over time. Appetite may return in 6-18 months, but the sleeve stays restrictive and does NOT expand over time. He says anyone who gains weight after having the sleeve a number of years isn't being truthful with themselves or others and are eating calories they shouldn't be eating, and are blaming the sleeve.

I trust my doctor over the article you sent. Sorry. As you can see I'm feeling less insecure as my surgery date nears...Sept 3.

I was sick too...the med's did me in....hope it never returns....was going for the sleeve but opting as you know for the RNY...yes in the back of my mind I worry about me really being able to keep it up...it is funny with the band I envisioned the moon and the stars....second time around with the abuse and pain the band has caused....not feeling so adament about my ability to get and keep the weight off..but I have to.My life depends on it.

The band has made me an involuntary bulimic.I constantly worry about what I can and can't eat.Sept 3 is around the corner and the future is going to be fantastic for you!

My pcp suggested either the sleeve or the bypass. But I'd had pancreatitis once and decided I'd do better with the sleeve and direct access to the pancreas if ever needed. I think the choice is 6 one way and 1/2 a dozen the other ;-)

My feelings are whatever we choose for ourselves, it's the right choice at that time. You've done your homework, me too, so now we move forward! I'm not having problems with my pre-op diet and don't anticipate problems afterwards. If they happen, they happen, but I'm refusing to worry about them till they do! I'm only anticipating a happy future that no longer revolves around food, but around a healthier body, new clothes and keeping up with grandkids!!

Best of luck with your by-pass choice. I'm happy for you and hope your outcome is wonderful!

Yes we have got to get this weight off!!!you will be fine my friend who just got the sleeve is losing nicely...she is about a 55 BMI she has lost 45 pounds in 3 months. She just joined a gym for the first time. She is walking with her daughter who had the surgery several weeks before her.She looks and feels great. One thing with the sleeve...you must eat small meals frequently...this is good. With this band I am belching and burping ready to barf at any given moment...can't eat right now and I am starved...this is abuse.

I'm having my sleeve done on Sept. 14th! I started my liquid diet yesterday and it was a really rough day (I don't remember going through this preparing for the band). Today was much better and I didn't have a pounding headache all day. For the first time, in this almost year long journey, I am beginning to feel a little scared! My band removal was a breeze (June 29th) but I guess now it's all sinking in that this is my new life again and what if it doesn't work again? What kind of pain will I be in? What if, what if, what

if?!??! I'm so excited and so nervous at the same time. I just don't want to fail.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
