I made arrangements with the nurses to help me put my underwear and an incontinence pad on as soon as surgery was done. I was worried about leaking when I was getting settled in my room. They were exceptionally cooperative. As soon as I started to come to, my nurse helped me to get situated. As far as a bra... You probably won't be able to wear in the hospital. They check your incisions regularly and a bra is going to interfere. Plus, it's probably going to be very uncomfortable hitting your incisions. I'm 3 1/2 weeks post op and am still just wearing a pull on sports bra because my regular bras hurt. I'm a 46L, so I'm exceptionally sympathetic of you not wanting your boobs hanging in the hospital. If your hospital has the big gowns, it really won't matter. I promise. By the way... If you're looking for a comfortable and supportive pull on sports bra for after surgery, the best I've found is at http://www.makingitbig.com/product/481/plus-size-bras they come in multiple colors and go up to size 8X.

Thank You for this link. I have never worn a sport bra that has to be put on over your head. I do see they would have my size but I am concerned about all the tugging that would be needed to get the boobs in to that kind of a bra. It does look like it has great support though.

@@ssflbelle I was able to put a bra on just about as soon as I was transferred back to my room after being in the recovery area. A regular bra will hurt the incision -- make sure you get an all cotton bra with no underwire that fastens in front, like this:

checking the incision won't be a problem, you just pull up the bottom band a little if the doctor or nurse needs to see under there.

This one looks very similar to a bra I have now. All my bras are front closer and none have wire in them. I usually use the Goddess brand with the high back. Because of my size they aren't very pretty and really don't seem to hold me up very well ether. However being in the electric scooter when I am out not to many people see me standing.

I too have urine problems and was thinking of asking the nurse to help me get into a diaper or be catherized. With my injuries I can't get out of the bed many times fast enough to get to the bathroom. I am on a 6th month supervised diet so hopefully by 2016 I will have lost enough weight to be out of the 300's and better able to get out of bed and do things.

I put my bra on as soon as I got to my room after recovery. Even though I was still a little groggy I forced myself to put on my own gown, bra. I applied makeup, painted my nails then went for a walk. I work at the hospital where I had my surgery and was going to have lots of visitors and I didn't want my boobs flipping and flopping around LOL

I had to take everything off for surgery. You want the environment to be sterile especially close to the incisions during surgery. I brought my own robe to wear around the hospital. It's was thicker and covered me up more than what the hospital offers. I put my bra on when I got dressed for discharge but it was uncomfortable.

Thank you all for your replies! I am very conservative and don't really want people having access to my "junk" while I am out cold! My cousin said I am crazy and will be too nervous to even think of it the day of surgery!

It's not like you're laying there naked on the table. Whatever they don't need access to, they keep covered up.

My surgery will be done by a robot..don't think she'll care one way or another ???? but honestly, you'll probably be asked just to have your gown on to make sure the environment is sterile.

I was given some disposable underwear to put on under my gown, but they were tiny and ripped when I tried to put them on, so I went commando. As for the bra situation, I was able to wear a bra the day after my surgery without issue. Where that top incision is didn't actually sit on my bra line, it was maybe a half inch lower than where the bottom of my bra touched.

Not a dumb question at all and I thank you for asking it. My concern is not the operating room but walking around the floor with my boobs hanging down to my knees. I am not kidding just look at my before pictures and those are with a bra on. If the incision is close to the bra line how soon after surgery were you ladies allowed to wear a bra again?

As you're talking about your boobs, I'm thinking "hey they sound like mine!" Hahah! Great, I never thought about this issue before. Now you gave me something else to worry about now! LOL.

One of the main reasons why you can't wear a bra besides it being in the way is because a lot of bras have metal in them, if God forbid something were to happen where you were to need a defibrillator used to restart your heart you would NOT want any metal on your body while being shocked. You would get fried. Trust me nobody is going to give a second thought to what you look like, we healthcare professionals see so much on a daily basis it's not even worth mentioning, unless you come in the ER with a foreign object shoved up your butt....we will laugh at you behind your back and then keep it moving good luck on your surgery!!!

My sister is an ER nurse and this is so true! Except they appreciate that the people with foreign objects in their butts at least *need* to come to the ER. What will really get her and the other nurses talking, laughing, and frustrated is the people that come to the ER for a hangnail. She had someone come in Friday night whose stomach had hurt for a whopping total of 8 minutes! She drove straight from the restaurant to the ER! And we're not talking excruciating, stabbing pain here. We're talking a stomach ache because she ate too much!

I think for people who would like to wear bra/underwear, they should come up with some kind of sterile undergarments. It matters to so many people and I think it would give some peace of mind

My surgeon allowed us to wear panties under our gown so we weren't exposed when we walked into the OR. I took a bit of anaesthetic before I went to sleep so the last thing I remember was them wrestling trying to get my panties off. Apparently in recovery I kept asking who stole my panties. Glad all you health professionals know that we are "under the influence" and can laugh at the crazy things we say????

No dumb questions ever! Once you are out, you will not care. Its not just because of access, its also because of sanitary reasons. You can't consider a OR completely sterile if you have any type of garments on. They cover you with paper drapes etc. once you are on the table. You are not just lying there nude. Hope that helps.

I have had surgery prior to this and I always had to take off my bra and underwear (tonsils taken and thumb surgery. No where near my undergarments. Once I was awake and walking laps around the hospital floor not once did I think to put a bra on. I just let those bad boys swing with the wind.
