Constipation?!?!?

Recommended Posts

It's been a few days I haven't gone n I was wondering if anyone has an issue using the bathroom. If so is there anything we can do or take? I was told to start activia?

1st, always call your doctor if you need medical advice, he's in the best position to know your situation.

Having said that,

During my 1st two weeks post-op, I don't think I went to the bathroom once. There just wasn't enough food in my system, after years of handling 3 - 4 thousand calories a day, I had plenty of storage space in there! :-P

It took a few months to adjust to my new "normal". And I went through the "never trust a fart!" phase, and then onto the Constipation phase, then finally, a new normal of going every 3 or 4 days.

The few times I've needed "help", I used Milk of Magnesia. I took a double dose and that did the trick.

Others have recommended Smooth Move tea, but I am not a tea drinker.

So you might ask yourself, have you eaten enough to need to "go"?

miralax is what I add to my coffee, Protein drink or yogurt just about everyday. I have also bumped up my Fiber intake and that has also meant more calories (200 roughly more per day). My weightloss has slowed a bit I think because of the slight increase in calories but I hated the feeling of "fullness" that the Miralax didn't quite help.

If you can use Fiber such as Miralax and my personal fiber of choice Metamucil. I am to the point now that I can go a day or two without taking it and still manage a normal poop. But I tend to drink at least one 8oz glass of orange juice/Metamucil mix in the mornings.

Before surgery, my system had worked great on a high carbohydrate, high fat diet :), now, 8 months out, I'm still trying to find a balance; I have needed to incorporate more "help" then I like (Benefiber, Colace, sometimes Senocot, sometimes Miralax). I just really want to avoid the straining and the feeling of being ... bloated.

I have to take benefiber every morning. I just add it to my Water or Protein Shake. It does not have a taste and it has helped me.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
