What to do when your goal is not your goal?

Recommended Posts

Sleeved on 12/16/14. 348lbs. 5'11". Male. 44 years old.

Doctor told me that a realistic expectation for me, if I did well, was loss of 60lbs after 6 months, and 110lbs after one year.

I have SHATTERED that. Where I was told that 240 would likely be my final goal weight, I am down 121 lbs after 7 months, and only 3lbs away from my "dream" goal of 225lbs.

Here's the deal: I will be at that weight in a week or so, but I look at my body now, and I still see a mess. I feel like if I lost 50 more pounds, I MIGHT be in a comfortable place, but I don't know. Am I struggling with dysmorphia? Something else?

I should be THRILLED that I am so far ahead of schedule. Last week, I even "ran" (well, no walking) my first 10K (unthinkable even a year a go).

What should I do, now that I know that my goal isn't my goal?

Some docs give their patients some pretty conservative "goals" so as (I think) not to discourage people who aren't as focused as you are. Yeah, some WLS people aren't focused.

FTR, my doc didn't give me any weight loss goals at all. He just asked me what my goals were and then said, "You'll do great!" I liked that approach. And I reached my weight loss goal 8.3 months post-op. Three months later I've lost another 6 pounds. Very happy camper here. :)

For all of us who go from obese to a normal weight range, we've changed our appearances so radically (as you are) that the changes certainly require us getting used to them. And that doesn't happen overnight. I wouldn't be so quick to call it a disorder with a nice Latin-sounding name.

You just go on and become your own good self. And if you don't like what you look like eventually, you can alter that considerably through more exercise and surgery.

50 more pounds, I MIGHT be in a comfortable place

@@Bob B

120lbs gone in 7 months

you are aces!!! :)

i also wasn't given any goal weight to go by

i initially "mentally" put my goal at 145 lbs

when i reached that #, i knew i was able, and should loose some more weight

changed goal to130

(little fluctuations)

i feel great

you aren't totally thrilled with your new weight #

IMO - i would continue to loose 10, or 20 more lbs, or etc etc

where ever YOU feel comfortable :)

go for it, its your body!!!

continue to loose weight

sad we will continue to see "less and less" of you  ;)

keep up the good job

good luck :)

kathy

congrats

IMHO your goal is maintaining a healthy weight and maybe getting prepped to run the 10k next year :D

Weight charts I have looked at says ideal weight range for men 5'11 is between 160-180.

GREAT JOB. My dr told me I would loose about 80 in a year. I was sleeved on 5/29/15 at 305lbs. I'm down to 235 as of yesterday when I saw my surgeon. She couldn't believe it. My goal weight is now is 210.

My goal also keeps going down. It's hard to stop the urge and exciting feeling of continuing to gain weight. I'm also scared to up my calories. But at some point it does have to stop.

I think it depends on how you feel, your BMI for your frame size and your doctor.

I can't really give you great advice here since I am in the same place at 120 pounds lost in seven months but I just want to say I know how you feel and I empathize.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
