My taste changed for the Protein shakes I got accustomed to prior to surgery. And coming home from surgery, I was sensitive to smells of food.

I still like the same things, but certain thing foods my tummy likes less that my heads liked them.

My tastebuds definitely changed after surgery. I could't even drink the Water in the hospital because it tasted extremely chlorinated. Protein shakes tasted bad after surgery. Most foods were very bland after surgery.

My tastes definitely changed. Water has tasted horrible to me since surgery. Not good when you need so much of it. I finally found I could handle tepid/room temperature Water best. I used to love iced water, and the no calorie drops you put in iced water, forget it now, I want nothing to do with it. It makes it really difficult to get in my minimum water requirements daily, I'm sorry to say. I love hot tea. Celestial Seasonings no caffeine Raspberry Zinger.

Also, most foods did not taste right to me, and still don't. I don't really care all that much though. I'm still not experiencing hunger 2+ months after surgery. No cravings to speak of. I think that this means the surgery was a success!

It's just going to be trial and error for you. You'll find out what works and what doesn't. Best of luck to you, with everything @@Niki15 !

@@Niki15 The warm Soup usually helps on the liquid diet. I'm not sure what your liquid diet consists of, but I had to do 5 shakes a day with extra Protein in each shake, with 2% milk.

I could also do SF Jello, broth, SF popsicles, caffeine free coffee, tea etc.

I would double up on my shakes at least once a day, and that was key for me, in feeling full.

I know it's difficult, but you'll be fine. Take it one day at a time. :)

my taste just got more intense - e.g, salty things taste saltier, sweet things taste sweeter.

I couldn't bear the taste of plain Water my first few weeks post surgery (and my surgeon's PA said that is really common and she has no idea why), but now that I'm a few months out, nothing really TASTES different/bad to me vs. how it tasted pre-op. I know other people lose the taste for certain meats and things like that, but the thing that has changed the most for me is food preferences. I crave fruits and vegetables more than things like chocolate/sweats and carb-heavy products like bread just because the former makes me feel better and the latter makes me feel sick if I have more than 2 bites. Even high quality chocolate will make me nauseous if I eat more than a bite or two. So it's kind of more of a behavioral aversion (which is something I hoped my RNY would cause!) than the change in taste that other people have experienced.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
