My doctor & nurse said it was ok. Anyway to get in my liquids was fine. Except soda.

I know coffee is not on my list but since recent studies have proven it is not a dehydrating beverage and is allowed on many other Dr.'s lists, I used my own judgement and tried it. I am careful about monitoring for acid reflux and alway take my Prilosec. I have had zero problems with it. Sometimes I think you just have to use your own common sense.

coffee is the one "vice" I have left! One year out and I'm still taking my tummy pills (Protonix or OTC omnaprazole), so the acid doesn't bother my stomach. My personal rule is to not count caffeine drinks as Fluid, so every day I drink 64+ ounces of non-caffeinated beverages - mostly watered-down Crystal Light Decaf iced tea. I will say that after a cup of coffee I feel a bit hungry, so I time my Snacks in order to have them 15-30 minutes after coffee. My other source of added energy is a B-12 supplement. I find that the sub-lingual type makes me jittery, so I take a time-released version, and that helps all day long.

My surgeon said no caffeine ever -- even had to sign something that said I understood that. Caffeine is acidic and increases the risk of GI bleed, with in our small tummies would not be a good thing.

This is what I've been told too. Years ago when I had the beginning of an ulcer, the doctor took me off of caffeine because it's very hard on your stomach.

Why can't we have caffeine? I don't know the true reasoning behind it.. is it gonna hurt me? I have a toddler ....if you catch my drift.... ????

I'm allowed up to 16oz if surgery immediately post op. Had my first today. In fact my nut suggested mixing Protein Powder into iced coffee.

I drink coffee daily...now. I didn't start until 6 months. Give yourself time to heal if you aren't. It hasn't hurt me yet. Just don't add a bunch of sugar to it or anything. But you already know that ;)

T. Whitaker,

Bufflehead’s right – caffeine doesn’t dehydrate you if you keep it to reasonable amounts. (Of course, as a weight loss surgery patient, you could be at higher risk if you are barely meeting your Fluid needs as it is).

One reason I know of for limiting or avoiding caffeine after WLS is its acidity. It can irritate your pouch or sleeve lining. Also, it can trigger acid reflux, especially in lap-band patients.

Another problem – especially for WLS patients – is that caffeine can reduce nutrient absorption, especially Calcium and Iron. Calcium deficiency can harm your bones long term, and Iron deficiency can give you anemia. Both are common after WLS, even without caffeine!

I think the ideal is to avoid caffeine – if you need more energy, it’s best to get more sleep, exercise regularly, and stick to a regular schedule. If that’s impossible because of your family, I’d say minimize the amount you have, and definitely talk to your surgeon if you have any problems tolerating it.

I started green tea after surgery, didn't do coffee again until 2 months out. But I had a quick surgery, no complications, kept it slow to see what I could tolerate. I don't do cream in coffee, but I have taken to putting half a scoop of GENEPRO in my coffee with stevia and Vietnamese cinnamon.

I was told no to caffeine beverages, but 1 cup of coffee a day is okay.

Talk to your Doctor.

I still haven't had my surgery yet, but I know once I do, I will quit caffeine. I am slowly pushing it out of my life now.

I tried some sugar free sweet tea the other day.

I spent the night feeling as though I was a fire breathing dragon, it caused such bad heartburn. I'm starting to think severe heartburn due to the acidity might be a valid reason.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
