Getting enough fiber/Constipation

Recommended Posts

I haven't had surgery yet, but I'm preparing and starting to eat better. I just started to take Centrum adult chewable vitamins. It has Iron in it and it's making me constipated. After I have the sleeve I don't know how much Fiber I'll get in. I'm worried about Constipation. Is it ok to take Miralax in Water from the get go after surgery? If I can swallow stool softeners is that ok? The stool softeners are little pills. I know after taking narcotic pain meds and no food plus the iron in the chewable Vitamins, I can see a real problem of constipation. Advice please.

I would say so. I was about two weeks post surgery when I started on prescription Miralax. After that I have been taking Metamucile daily since. When I wasn't on any fiber I was extremely bloated and I think constipated once. But you may want to clear a laxative/fiber with your surgeon before taking something over the counter.

Yes. I was in rough shape during the first two weeks, until I discovered Miralax. And remember that during the first couple of weeks, fluids are even more important than Protein. Get that going, and so will you! B)

I had a terrible time finding the right amount of Fiber to deal with Constipation. The directions from the surgeon's office was 25 grams of Benifiber per day. That gave me horrible diarrhea. They then reduced the amount of Benifiber to 12 grams a day. Diarrhea continued. I finally decided Benifiber was the problem and switched to Gummy fiber with 4 grams of fiber per day. The problems continued. I stopped all fiber supplements and tried one probiotic pearl a day and that seems to be working fine. Everyone's systems react differently to supplements. I do keep Miralax handy in case I have a problem but Miralax takes 2-3 days to work for me.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
