PAIN! Worry? Explainable?

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody....

I'm 6 days out RNY. Still in clear liquid phase. I'm having a lot of gas rumbling between my chest and pressure in my lower abdomen, and major pain in my left shoulder (they said gases take hold in the shoulder) and ribs. I've taken two doses of liquid painkillers, but it won't go away. I even took two gas-x chewables, waiting to see if that helps. Should I be alarmed? I don't know what is normal pain, what is not. My revision was profoundly painful.

My gas didn't start to move until week 2 and it was slow. I didn't get the shoulder/rib pain, or any pain really. I was uncomfortable but nothing to be alarmed about. Hope it gets to moving soon.

Walk, walk, walk!!! I know my gas was worse going into the 2nd week. When I went for my first follow up the surgeon's best advice was walk.

Best advice ever.. walk until you can't walk anymore. ..on my 2nd night in the hospital my gas was so bad I literally walked all night...and napped in a chair....but glad I did that bc the gas started passing the next day. ...so keep walking.

I am consistently up and moving. I live in a mobile home so distance is an issue. But I'm up going from one end of the house to the other doing chores, and completing odd jobs, nothing heavy. The hospital told me the gas would show up in my shoulder, and boy can that get bad, but less often now. As for the ribs, I don't know if that's gas. The pain is in the ribs right next to where my drainage line goes into my side. I see the surgeon Monday, I'll check with him. But the bloating in my abdomen is definitely gas.

I am walking several times an hour, up and down my home, doing small chores and completing odds and ends. But my mobility issue kicks in and I have to sit. So little walks back and forth. It doesn't affect my gas pain at all. Not at all. I end up taking 2 gas-x's, sit back and ride it out.

I release gas constantly, but the pain, when it comes on, never stops. And it's always in the evening. I have to go to the bathroom most times to release because it's usually accompanied by something else (if you know what I mean).

Calgon! Take me awayyy!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
