Surgery Date July 23rd - Pre Op Diet, do I don't I

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I have a surgery date of July 23rd 15  , which makes 30 days today until I go under the knife! What concerns me most is how much of a mental thing the pre-op diet is.

I have been on/off diets all year with my only success in January, when I did 28 days of Protein Shakes only (its a diet called EXANTE here in the UK). Since then it has been an absolute struggle to do anything, hence the decision for surgery.

Yesterday was supposed to be the start of the pre-op diet (which I have been told I only need to do for 7-10 days before, but wanted to make a good start). However, I ended up feeling hungry and then went into an overeat mode in the evening, sigh.

I have woken up very early this morning with load rushing through my head, and I am now thinking that as I am paying £9000 out of my own pocket, I should really make a better effort.

So my question is, what do I do?

  1. Stick to my 1000kcals a day and suck up the hunger
  2. Return to the Protein shake diet which is really hard, but will give the best start to my surgery
  3. Don't worry about the pre-op diet until 7-10 days before my op

I don't want an out, so I am not looking for all you nice people to say "Go for 3", I am looking to you guys that were or are in the same position to me to let me know what you did, why you did it and what motivated you.

Thanks all.

My surgeon also in UK has said not to do the liver shrinking diet. However because I want to give myself a better chance I am going to do 1000 cal diet as best I can for 2 weeks before op which is 16 July.

d luck with it anyway

Chris

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
