My nutritionist gave me a pre op diet that I could eat limited food on, but now I'm nervous because so many are doing liquid diets. Should I be worried?

Not at all. The only reason I was put on liquids was because I hadn't lost any weight pre-surgery. The standard in my surgeon's practice was a modified regular diet pre-surgery, with liquids only the day before.

Every nutritionist is different but they all have success it seems. I was on a full liquid 14 day pre-op diet. The pre-op diet varies also because it depends on what needs to happen to your liver prior to surgery. The purpose of the diet is to shrink it making surgery as safe as possible. Some folks need to shrink more than others.

Don't be nervous. Every doctor/nutritionist has different guidelines. My doctor just told me to eat lean Protein and veggies like a sane person. LOL That's for two weeks pre-surgery, and then I have two days of Clear Liquids right before surgery. My surgery is 6/23.

I've lost 8 pounds already and still have 5 days until surgery. Just follow *your* doctor's/nutritionist's orders and don't worry about what other people are doing. You'll be fine.

Don't be nervous! Everybody's pre-op diet is different!

Today is (day one) of my pre-op diet. 1200 calories a day for 12 days and a two day liquid diet. My NUT told me I can cheat one time, but I highly doubt I will. I'm going to stick to 1200 or under!

Good luck!!

Nope. Don't worry. It largely depends on the condition of your liver. I had to do a 10 day liquid diet. There have indeed been a few folks here who just had to do low carb. It is entirely up to your own team. Good luck with your surgery.

I had two weeks of a low-carb, high-Protein diet pre-op -- but NOT liquid. There isn't anything magic about liquids pre-op, at least not to my surgeon and dietician. I did great and my surgeon has an exceptionally low complication rate overall.

If you don't mind my asking, who is your doctor? He sounds just like mine. His words to me? "I could force you into a liquid diet for two weeks like my colleagues, but all I need you to do is eat high Protein, low carb for the next couple weeks. If you can lose 10 pounds or so, that's great."

@TakeitorSleeveit I feel tons better! I've been following the low carb diet (with several food funerals in between) since January. I'm down 31 pounds. I've just been more strict these past 2 weeks and lost about 8 pounds so far. I'm going to do full liquids starting Sunday and then Clear Liquids Monday. Surgery is Tuesday.

@@TakeitorSleeveit well it's possible, we are in the same state, right? Mine is Dr. Keary Williams at NewLife Bariatric in Knoxville.

I'm actually in Nashville, so we have different surgeons. LOL

Your plan sounds just like mine. I have clear liquids Sunday and Monday, and my surgery is Tuesday morning!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
