To continue Protien shakes or not?

Recommended Posts

I'm really confused, some folks are saying their docs want them off Protein Shakes at 3 weeks? Why? How do you possibly get enough Protein without them? I'm not getting enough protein even with them! My doc has said I'll pretty much have to drink at least two a day forever. Someone enlighten me

I will be one of those people who will drink one a day forever mostly because I cannot consume enough food to deliver 70 grams or more of Protein. I am over 8 months post op.

I have never been told to stop them at a certain point but have been coached to focus my actual meals on Protein and good carbs like vegetables and fruits. Then supplement with a shake if necessary.

I was told I could consume two a day forever. I believe I plan to do this!

My surgeons office is one that requires you to stop Protein Shakes. They want you to learn how to get your Protein from dense filling protein sources like meats and fish eggs etc..they don't want post bypass patients relying on soft mushy liquidy foods that go down so easily. I understand the rationale but I know for myself, post surgically if I'm not getting enough protein in a day I'm having a shake!

@Mobeans63 I agree with you! I just don't see how you could possibly eat enough Protein, even if all you ate was high quality high Protein foods. There just isn't enough room in my little pouch!

At 5 months post op, I am still have 2 shakes a day. I can't eat enough to get all the Protein in that is required without it. The way it is, I only eat Protein as I never have enough room to eat any veggies unless I eat them as a snack. I also have fruit as a snack.

I too have to drink the shakes to get enough Protein in. I am 8 months out and plan to drink them forever. My doc does not mind and in fact incourages it if we feel hungry.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
