How did everyone feel the first few days after surgery? I know everyone is different but I am interested to hear what everyones experiences were. I have wanted this so badly for so long and to hear I am approved and get a surgery date within 2 weeks is making me feel so many different emotions at once. I am mainly concerned because although i am married hes not much of a help to me everyone is offering to help me with my kids they are 4 and 1 but sometimes not everyone comes through on that promise ya know so I am just wanting an idea of what to look forward to.

@@Michaelene take as much help as is offered. A one and four year old will be a challenge at times with the fatigue you will experience.

I was tired! Not much pain but tired. Take naps when you can without quilt. You need sleep/rest to heal. Take all the help that is offered the first week or two.

Plan now for how you are NOT going to pick your children up! You won't be able to lift a child for a couple of weeks if not longer after surgery. Prepare yourself and your child for that now! That will include lifting into car seat, stroller, etc.

I agree with above. Plan NOW. You absolutely cannot pick up kids for at least two weeks. Actually it's 4 weeks but being a mom that won't happen. I stayed with my mom for the first three days after discharge so that I wouldn't be tempted to pick up my kids. They're 4 and 2. After about 10 days I only lifted the little one to put him in bed.

Everybody has a different experience. I was extremely tired and I had a lot of pain for the first few weeks! Each day it got a little better and I a little stronger. I have no regrets and would definitely do it again!

I just had mine done less than 3 weeks ago! You will certainly need the help for about the first two weeks. On my second week post-op I found the pain was worse in my tummy and was not able to roll over in bed without pain. But now 3 weeks out and I am lifting my daughter who is 3 when I need to without strain! I was lucky to not have much for gas pain though. Advice on that is to walk a lot! Good luck.

You will not be able to care for the kids after surgery. Period. This is like a bad childhood tummy ache combined with C-section type soreness. I'm three days postoperative. I can walk and dress myself but no way can I take care of kids. You can't lift them either. Hubby has to get onboard and take off a week to run the show and care for you and kids. My wife took off day of surgery and came to hospital every day to manage the medical staff who were nice but about half incompetent. (They tried to give me French toast for Breakfast on day two and argued for some time that they were right). she is off work with me for the first week and is bringing me drinks, Jello, pills etc. trying to get in the required 64 ounces per day of fluids. Get a plan in place that requires you to do nothing for others for at least a week.

I do wish that was possible :( unfortunately I am the glue for this ship my husband lost his job last month so he's not working and the kids are in daycare during the day but he's like a child himself and not very Good at helping others he's a very self centered person uugghhh I think this is going to be a disaster and now I am panicking:/

Then you need another full time helper. Mother? Sister? Hire someone.? Don't go in until this is worked out. You cannot recover from this and run a household first week. Don't even consider trying.

My child is older. She was 15 when I had my surgery. I could not have cared for a smaller child immediately post op. I was on pain meds for about a week and a half and I took naps everyday for at least the first two weeks.

I say take all the help that is offered to you. This is your time that you need to heal and let your body rest.

Good luck to you. This surgery is a wonderful life changer.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
