Surgery was on a Thursday and coughing was not in the plans

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I just had surgery on Thursday 6/4/2015 and I very excited. I must admit that I woke up a ball of nerves because I was not sure I would wake up with regret(yes, I watched a lot of youtube videos lol). Fortunately, that is not the case. Today I had to cough and my word that was painful and uncomfortable. My sister keeps saying to grab a pillow it will absorb the shock, in the moment it really didn't feel that way. As for my Fluid intake, and I am still running behind on that. Though I made slushies out of the Isopure and that helped immensely. Today I will be on sipping duty, I will try my best to get everything or most everything down. We shall see how it goes.

staying hydrated, for me, is hard to do. I am not allowed to have a drink in my work area.

Sip, sip, sip. Drinking is the hardest part after the procedure. I thought something was horribly wrong because I couldn't drink much right after. Do ice chips, Water even sf popsicles to get Fluid in. In time your intake will be much easier. I can swallow larger amounts at a time now.

I had seasonal allergy issues at surgery and went in with a cough. I held that pillow to me and it really did help but it was still not great. It will pass also and you will be okay!

Good luck!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
