June 10 - Seeking a mentor near San Antonio, Texas.

Recommended Posts

I am literally one week away from surgery, and I am all over the place mentally and physically. I would love to pair up with someone 1+ years post-op. I can use all of the motivation and support I can get! :)

That's awesome! What a coincidence. I would rather be at North Central Baptist, but my surgeon uses Southwest General. Although you cannot be a mentor just yet, I would love to keep in touch as we share this journey at the same time. Please add me as a friend and God bless! Six days! :)

JCrumm,

Thank you! I need to lose 212 lbs to make it to my goal weight, so I know you will be a great resource for me. I have done lots of research, but there are still things that are remain gray areas for me. So, I will definitely have some questions. I have sent you a friend request so we can remain in touch.

rgodfrey09,

Surgery went great. I was the first one on the table on Wednesday morning and in a room by noon. I was discharged the very next day after finishing close to 50% of two trays. I'm really blessed. The gas has been manageable, but I have been in some pain. My doc wouldn't give me anything other than Tylenol 3, and it is honestly useless. Each day I am feeling stronger and stronger. I had guests for the first time, and they said that they couldn't even tell I had had surgery.

How did it go for you? Are you home yet?

grace,

I decided to trust the process, trust my research, trust my surgeon, and most importantly trust God. The day before surgery I was focused on cleaning out, packing up, and spending the evening with my family. The morning of surgery, I went in confident and by the time they finished my IV, I was meeting the anesthesiologist and getting on the table. It still feels like a dream, but they made sure that I left with all questions answered.

I think I'm most worried that I won't loose any weight. I know i know... That is ludicrous, but it has been such a life long struggle with my weight I Doubt my bodies ability to be a normal size!

I had been praying a lot about WLS and finally gave it to GOD and low and behold he had not one but three separate people speak to me in a fee days time about their WLS journey! I took it as a sign and called my surgeon that week.

I know that this journey is going to be 50% weight loss battle ... 50% emotional battle... I am just trying to prepare myself for it all!!

I can 1000% relate to your concern about losing weight. I struggle with that right now. However, what I know for sure is that I am not going to give up until I reach my goal. Attitude is everything. The surgery allows us a "reset." I'm learning to eat all over again as if I was a baby. I consider that a gift, not a prison sentence. Even on my worst day, I have to remember that. We can do it.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
