Hello! I've been approved for surgery and I'm scheduled for surgery in Houston on June 19th. I haven't told anyone about this surgery. I've kept it private, which I'm sure I'll be happy abut in the long run,but for now that means I don't have a sounding board. I Also need a hernia repaired, which makes for a good cover. I'm ready to get this over with. I know it's what I need to do, but I feel nervous and a little alone. I have 2 kids and I'm divorced. I don't want them to worry about me. Well, thanks for reading this :)

ANewBeginning15,

I haven't told anyone but a select few close friends, my boyfriend and my mother. I personally do not feel it is anybody's business what I do with my body - I may feel differently in the future, but for now it's just those I can count on. You're doing a wonderful thing for yourself, that's all that matters.

Thank you, Lady Rouge. I haven't even told my mother. :-/ I'm just private in that way.

I haven't and won't be telling my mother either. I have only told a very few people. My kids know I had abdominal surgery but I just claimed hernia repair with some complications. It's been much easier than having to justify or explain it to anyone. When people ask about how I've lost weight, I answer "high Protein, low carb." The only exception was to a good friend who asked who might benefit from WLS.

You owe nobody any explanations. Good luck.

I am not into telling people about my upcoming procedure. Too many judgy people. I've told my parents, boss, two coworkers, and my Girl Scout co leader. I'll probably tell a few others, but honestly it's none of their business.

I've actually found myself hesitant to even use my card for discounts/permission to order from kids menus at restaurants. I fear the judgment. I have only used it once tonight and surprisingly nobody reacted. I was able to order from the kid's menu for once lol

I though about not telling my friends but it seems to hard to hold that big of a secret forever. I just told my family and friends and it went much better then I expected. I do understand not wanting to tell anyone, but if you do it may turn out better then you expected. Silver lining is you get to see who your real friends are.

I made a Facebook post about it. Everyone knows and i have gotten nothing but love and support. I had over 200 lbs to lose and I knew that people would figure it out. But you don't owe anyone. Do what's comfortable for you. The only person that bugs me about anything is my dad. Not because I had the surgery, but when we go out and I have 1 bite of bread to finish my meal or something like that, he's on my @$$ saying " can you have that? Are you cheating?" Finally I just told him that I can have whatever I want since I'm only eating 800 calories a day!

At first I wasn't going to tell anyone. Only myself and my husband would know. I did decide to tell our children. They all know and are being super supportive. I have 4 very close friends that would be hurt if I hadn't told them before the procedure and they know and are being very supportive as well. That was going to be all that I told. I did join one of those "private" June Sleever groups and found my doctor on Facebook as well. That was a HUGE mistake because they may be private as to the posts and content but Facebook put that I joined the groups and that I "liked" my doctors page. Then the bombarding began!! No one was rude but lots of concern. So I immediately unjoined the groups and unliked my doctors page. facebook's idea of private and my idea of private are not the same.

I don't really have a problem with who knows or not myself. I occasionally post status updates on FB for those able to see my posts. This is to encourage and show the ups and downs of my journey. A cousin was a bit of a wet blanket but even that has changed to encouragement.

My daughter kind of freaked out that I was so "open" because she isn't herself. I know people judge. I also know some who want to do this but are afraid of the unknown do perhaps my openness can be a beacon?

There is no right or wrong way to be....only what makes YOU comfortable! Best wishes!

Michelle

I agree that it's a personal choice and it is no ones business. I chose to be open about it. I have been so blessed that everyone has been so supportive, I know that not everyone is that lucky. This forum is such a great resource, best of luck to you!

I'm glad to hear from others in the issue that I kind of battled with. I chose not to tell anyone except my husband and my eldest daughter, she is 21. I finally told my mom 3 days before my surgery. I have 2 boys, 12 and 10, they knew I had surgery but weren't sure for what, but they were ok with everything. I didn't want to hear anything negative from people, or all the "but why" questions. This was a very personal journey for me and I want to keep it personal. Possibly later I will share with more family and friends.

I've also chosen not to tell anyone, although I'm having my gallbladder removed at the same time. My family & friends just think that's all I'm going in for. My husband is the only person that knows and has been so wonderful with me. I just want to avoid the negative comments & those few people I KNOW will tell me not to do it.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
