Timeframe - from decision to have surgery to getting surgery

Recommended Posts

I've decided to have weight loss surgery. What happens next? Do I have to undergo anything extension before getting surgery.....or do I just meet with the doctors and set up an appointment?

Are you self-pay or insurance pay? If you are self-pay you pick a doctor and they do blood work and a few other tests, some to require a psych eval, but not all. Then schedule your surgery. If you are insurance it depends on your insurance company. I am self-pay with no morbidity issues and I decided to do this the first of May and I am scheduled for June 15th.

Welcome!

When I decided to have WLS, I received a referral from my PCP. I had to attend a weight loss seminar at my surgeon's clinic. Afterwards they scheduled an appt. for me to meet with my surgeon. My insurance required a six month doctor supervised weight loss program and a psych evaluation before they would approve me. And my surgeon had a list of requirements that I had to complete - which included cardiac clearance, two psych evaluations, last five years of weight loss history, among a few other things.

Best advice I could give you is to consult with your primary care physician to see if they can provide you with a referral or call a weight loss clinic to see what your first step would be to start your journey. You may also want to check with your insurance provider to see if they could recommend a surgeon.

If you're self pay - I don't know too much about how to find a surgeon in Mexico, but I'm sure that someone who's done it can provide you with good information on how to proceed. Good luck!

It's very dependent on your insurance in the event you don't self-pay. (I have United Healthcare, which covered me 100%). As part of my six month waiting period, I had to partake in supervised a nutrition plan, undergo a psychological evaluation, have tests run by a cardiologist and pulminologist, under go an endoscopy, and have pre-op blood work. It can be a long wait from an emotional perspective, but it was worth the wait!

My advice is to knock out the cardiologist, psychologist, and pulminologist visits early on and the endoscopy at least six weeks before your surgery date. That way, you don't have to worry or scramble to get them in.

You may also only have to wait 3 months per your insurance company. It's dependent on their policy.

I was self-pay, so I had to go to a informational conference led by the hospital, which was on 8/22. I had two doctor's appointments, and one appointment with a nutritionist, and they rolled me into the ER on 9/9/13. If you're self pay it's fast, if you're insurance, it is a giant hassle.

I am retired, using BCBS Federal Employee insurance. I had to provide a two year medical history, which highlighted all efforts to monitor and/or control my weight, and a list of all of the weight loss measures and diets I have tried. I had to have bloodwork, EKG, liver ultrasound, an EDG to see if I had any stomach ulcers, a list of any co-morbidities related to being obese, and a BMI over 40.

In addition to that I had to have a three month supervised diet with a nutritionist, and a psych evaluation. Once all of that was met, the info was submitted to the insurance, and I was approved in two days. From that point, my sleeve surgery was scheduled and I had my sleeve about two weeks later. All-in-all, from my first visit to the bariatric clinic, the process took from mid-August to late December.

Exactly 6 months. First appt with surgeon on 11/18 my insurance Aetna requires 3 months so tentative surgery was discussed for March. Well my PCP, my surgeon and me all extremely busy so ended up delaying it an extra 2 months. Was just sleeved on 5/18.

Six months for me, too. Insurance required three months of nutrition/dietician classes (in a row) so from initial attendance at informational meeting in late November, through testing, met with surgeon, classes to now was six months. I scheduled my sleeve for June 8 (2 weeks) although I could have done it late May. Decided to finish school year before surgery! Hang in there...it seems like forever and the BOOM surgery date is right here!

My insurance requires a 3-month supervised diet, a psych eval, and a visit with a nutritionist.

However, my Bariatric program also requires an introductory seminar, a psych eval, two nutritionist visits, two physical therapy visits, a 5-week behavioral skills class, a pre-op support group, an endoscopy, an abdominal ultrasound, a chest x-ray, an ekg, and bloodwork.

So I decided I wanted the surgery in January, the earliest seminar was in February, I had my first weigh-in and visit with the nurse in March (that marked the beginning of my 3-month supervised diet) and I have my final weigh-in on June 15. After that I'll finally meet the surgeon and get my date, which will probably be in July. So it's quite a process!

I had a very narrow window that I could take time off work for surgery. (I own my own business and Jan/feb is the only time of year I'm NOT working 60+ hours/week) so even though I was self pay it took almost a year, most of which was spent researching online, sending emails, asking questions, reviewing medical journals, and reading books.

February 2013 - decided to have WLS and spent day and night researching types of WLS

May -decided to have VSG, so more research, questions and interviews with surgeons both in the U.S. and Mexico

August/September - decided to have surgery with Dr. Ariel Ortiz at Obesity Control Center

October - booked surgery for January 2014

November - decided to incorporate surgery time off over the holidays so I I wouldn't have to miss so much work. rescheduled surgery for Christmas time.

December 20, 2013 - Surgery Day....only had to miss 3 days of work!

I researched and decided late October to do WLS. I talked to my hubby and we both went to seminar that the doctor has for information purposes and that night set up an appt to meet with him. The seminar was Nov 4th and the first appt was Nov 11th (Veterans Day). They set up both chest xray & EKG to be done same day (I was off from work).

I then had to do three monthly classes and meet with Nut and see head doctor. I got irritated with them questioning my choice for lap-band and pushing the sleeve. The bariatric doctor said I was a good candidate for either. I was originally going to do the band for the lesser "down" time and to appease my adult daughter. She didn't want me to do anything permanent. I cancelled my class for December & February.

I continued to research to find out what I had missed about all of the complications and issues with the lap-band. I knew about all of it already and it made me question if the doctor just wasn't telling us everything at the seminar. He had told us about the erosion and slipping. It happens. I decided to start back and had my surgery three weeks ago. I messed up by cancelling because I had to wait about 6 weeks to get the 2nd and 3rd class done. I went with my original choice: sleeve.

I am thankful I backed off and did my research. If I hadn't stopped in December I would probably be closer to 3 months out, but I needed to be comfortable with my choice.

I met with my surgeon on the very first appointment. We talked about surgery at length and she wanted to make sure that I knew exactly this is what I wanted. I won't talk to her again until my pre-op. I know this is not the case for several, as every doctor is different.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
