30 or 60 minutes after a meal?

Recommended Posts

When were you told you could start drinking fluids after eating?

I was instructed by my dietician to wait 60 minutes, always and forever no matter what but recently started working out with a trainer that has a 10 year history of working with post-op bariatric patients who says sipping after 30 minutes is ok. Both are adamant in their beliefs. They are both very smart and I respect them. I can find information to support both camps. Intellectually I know I need to do what works for me, ultimately I want to do what is best for me. my Fluid needs have increased with working out so I'd love that extra 30 minutes to get more in but don't want to decrease my chances of long term success. It's effing frustrating.

I was told no Fluid 30 before or after. I don't think I could ever get in all the fluid if I had to wait an hour on either side!

I was told 15/1 hour. I've seen 30/30 and tried drinking sooner after eating and I feel sick so sticking to one hour.

I was also told 60 minutes after. I stick to that most of the time but have done 45 minutes a few times.

Thank you for your responses. Looks just like everything else gastric bypass rules related...we all get instructed something a little different. If anyone runs across articles that state why we should wait 60 minutes after eating I'd be interested in reading them. Thanks again!

So even my own literature from my dr, the Nut and the bariatric dept contradicted each other. My surgeon is a but radical. He basically said go vegetarian (not happening). He told me drinking and eating should be completely separate and you should not drink for an hour and a half after eating. The paper work from the clinic 1 hour. The nut 30 minutes, the hospital 30 minutes. So I wait at least 30 minutes. If I waited an hour and a half, I would never get all my Water in. I try to stick in the 30 - 45 minute range.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
