Any tricks or tips for small portion purchases?

Recommended Posts

I'm finally on soft food!! Yay! And that means I can have Salmon tonight :)

I figured I would get some veggies from the salad bar to steam- i.e. mushrooms, onions, carrot slices? and the smallest red potato I can find, cut in half, cook and mash it. Now for the Salmon...I have no idea if the fish counter will be willing to measure out 2 ounces of Salmon?

Anyone have any tips of what they do to get some nice fresh food in small portions for our tiny tummies? I'm all ears!

When I had my first soft food/fish I had grilled salmon at a family cookout. There was no way I would have been able to fit in anything but the salmon (and certainly not steamed or firm vegetables). With soft foods I was still only able to do veggies that were complete mush. I would bypass the sides and just have some nice soft, flaky salmon. Later that week I had some baked tilapia with a tiny bit of mushy green Beans and a bit of mashed potato.

Edited to answer your question: if are buying fresh fish at the grocery store they should be able to cut the filets in smaller portions for you.

I don't worry about small portions when buying. I just bring it home and section it out and freeze or I cook a bunch and freeze/refrigerate the left overs for later. I know that technically gets rid of the freshness past the first meal, but for me the convenience is worth it.

As mentioned above, I've never had an issue with asking the fish or meat department at the grocery store to portion out a smaller size.

My NUT says, 2 ounces is about the size of a small chicken leg or thigh. Are you eating at a resturant?

one ounce is about the your thumb. 3 ounce is about the size of a deck of cards or a unbreaded fish fillet.

Hope this helps.

Like @@Inner Surfer Girl said, there probably wont be much room for veggies right now. I had baked Tilipia as one of my first soft foods, and weighed out 2 oz... that was pretty much my limit. We had sautéed zucchini and I didn't have room for a bite. That tilapia was delicious though, as I am sure your Salmon will be! Enjoy slowly!

If I am eating out, I take the rest home.

If I am at the market, I buy (and cook) enough fresh food for at least two meals at once .

Thank you for all the feedback! I ended up stopping at the seafood counter and the guy was more than happy to weigh out a small portion- I said 2 ounces and it came to 1.8. I also got the cutest smallest red potato I could find...but ultimately ended up with just the salmon with some fresh dill. I did enjoy, very slowly, and the last bite went to the dog. :P

I hope this pic shows up- for your amusement- I was definitely amused. https://twitter.com/mglvernon/status/601751824517869568

Looking forward to my first day of soft food. It is still a long way away. My surgery is June 1st. Thanks for posting the pic! Got a good idea of what amount it will take to feel full post-surgery!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
