Gall bladder issues - advice sought

Recommended Posts

Hello Bariatric Pals, I am four months out from surgery and have begun to have what turns out to be issues with an abnormally functioning gall bladder. I've been having nausea and projectiles from both ends (sorry people). I had a HIDA scan and I'm borderline, on the wrong side. I have not had any pain though. My dr wants to remove it but has given me 2 weeks to see if meds will help.

Of note, I'm on a lot of antibiotics for another medical issue and I believe some of the nausea may be due to those. I'd kind of rather not go under the knife if I don't have to, but it it will make things better, I would. I haven't felt like exercising (and of course concern about being too far from a WC) and I've been eating some comfort foods (cream of rice, s/f pudding, etc), so it is a bit of a problem.

Do any of you who've had their gall bladders removed have advice on whether you'd do it over, how you felt before and after removal, are there things you have to do or eat, or can't do or eat? Or just any other guidance? Any counsel much appreciated.

I had no choice. Mine ruptured after weeks of miserable pain and discomfort. After surgery, I had to eat on the bland side during healing, but I never really missed the thing. What I have to watch now, 42 years later, is fatty, greasy, rich foods, because I don't have that gallbladder to process fats. But that's ok. I shouldn't eat that stuff anyway. I was 21 and it was 1973, back when they still cut you half in two. I was in the hospital eleven days. Today, they do it laparasopically and in some places it is outpatient day-surgery.

Like Miss Mac, I had mine removed in an emergency surgery situation about 4 years before my sleeve. I would say just have it removed. Once the gall bladder starts getting "sick", it usually gets worse and not better. Easy surgery. In my opinion, it was less painful than the sleeve. And yes, you may have the squirts for a few months after if you indulge in more fatty foods, but you won't be doing that anyway, right? ;)

Oh, and let me add (and this is TERRIBLE), I lost 10 pounds post surgery ;)

It's super common to develop gallbladder issues after rapid weight loss and pregnancy. The best thing to do (if it's not functioning) is too remove it. Because honestly, if not now...it will happen in the future. ????. The best thing you can do now is avoid anything hot, spicy, or greasy. A bland diet makes it slightly more tolerable to eat. As far as removal, it's typically done laparoscopic, with 3-5 small incisions. The worst part is that (darn) gas pain, and some people will have shoulder pain. You'll be sore as if you did a bunch of sit ups for a few days, then gradually get back to normal & feel tons better. I wish you the absolute best & a speedy recovery! Hope this helps. ☺️

Had a gastric sleeve in late October and just had my gall bladder removed at 7:45 pm last night. The pain compared to the sleeve is non existent - I took a tylenol at the hospital this morning and I haven't taken any since. The worst part is the gas bubble but nothing like the one from the surgery for the sleeve.

The surgeon offered to do the gall bladder in 3-4 weeks, but my attitude was - I am already here and I do not want to feel that pain anymore. I am glad it is behind me now as I am already healing. Good luck!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
